Springtime in Virginia is a jewel of fresh green landscapes, flowers of all colors and welcomed warmth from the sun, drawing our kids and families into the outdoors. As we enjoy this season, it’s important to remember that underneath all this beauty lies the danger of ticks with Lyme disease.

Our awareness is especially important as the mild winter leads experts to predict more ticks this year. So it’s time to ensure that we educate ourselves on the signs and solutions for Lyme disease.

While most people have learned to look for Lyme disease with a “bulls eye” red mark on the skin, not every case of Lyme disease presents this symptom. Some victims of Lyme disease experience flu-like symptoms, including fever, fatigue and body aches, while more advanced cases of Lyme disease can bring arthritis symptoms and neurological problems.

It’s important to check with health care professionals on any suspected symptoms of Lyme disease.

While we do things to protect our pets from fleas and ticks, they can still get Lyme disease. It’s important to check our outdoor animals regularly to lower the risk for our furry family members.

As a girl growing up with horses in Albemarle County and spending weekends at our family cabin in Shenandoah County, I’ve always been aware of the harmful effects ticks can have on animals and humans.

As parents, George Allen and I want to ensure our three children can enjoy outdoor activities from hiking to fishing to horseback riding safer with knowledge about and protection from Lyme disease.

For these reasons, I am participating in the Loudoun Lyme 5K on Sunday—to bring awareness to our families, friends and neighbors about the risk, prevention and care of Lyme disease.

The Mid-Atlantic is a prime region for ticks, with Loudoun County experiencing one of the highest rates of ticks and Lyme disease.

I encourage our Northern Virginia community to come out on Sunday for the Loudoun Lyme 5K, supporting the National Capital Lyme Disease Association for more education, research and treatments for Lyme disease.

Together, we can take steps for a safer enjoyment of Virginia’s beautiful outdoors.

ICYMI: George and Susan Allen Tour Small Businesses, Talk with Job Creators in Staunton, Botetourt County and Dinwiddie County

Henrico, VA – ICYMI: George and Susan Allen continued to campaign throughout Virginia this week touring small businesses and meeting with families, business owners, and farmers about their concerns and proven solutions to make “America Open for Business Again.” On Wednesday, George Allen met with job-creators from the Tri-Cities area at a small business roundtable at McCray Electric Company in Dinwiddie County. On Monday, Susan Allen toured Wright’s Dairy-Rite, an original drive-in restaurant, in Staunton and held a small business roundtable in Botetourt County.

Here’s what they’re saying …

Progress-Index: Allen holds roundtable with small business owners

“George Allen, a former Virginia governor and U.S. senator, met with small business owners at McCray Electric Co. yesterday, fielding questions about jobs, health care and what he hopes to accomplish if he is elected back to the Senate.” (Progress-Index, 5/3/12)

  • “Allen pledged to advocate for a flat tax option, fight      President Barack Obama’s health care law, pursue alternative and renewable      energy sources and cut wasteful government spending. • “He spoke at length about the need to streamline,      simplify and improve the nation’s tax code, which he said was needlessly      stressful and complicated. He lobbied against the death tax and argued for      a 15 percent decrease on corporate income tax, which would bring America      in line with or slightly below its global competitors.” (Progress-Index, 5/3/12)

“The message was well-received by the room full of invited guests, whose questions and concerns centered on bread-and-butter issues.” (Progress-Index, 5/3/12)

George Allen Holds Small Business Roundtable in Dinwiddie

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

George Allen Holds Small Business Roundtable in Dinwiddie

Listens to Dozens of Diverse Small Business Owners, Economic Developers and Farmers

Dinwiddie County, VA – Today, George Allen traveled to Dinwiddie County where he held a small business roundtable at family-owned McCray Electric Company with local and regional business owners about the uncertainty they face from Washington on a variety of issues. Allen’s Dinwiddie County small business roundtable is an important part of his visits with Virginia job-creators and families about the positive solutions in his Blueprint for America’s Comeback.

“In Dinwiddie County and in communities throughout Virginia, I hear from small business owners that Washington’s job-destroying regulatory policies are causing uncertainty in their business,” said George Allen. “McCray Electric Company sees the effects of Washington’s anti-American energy policies each day.  Virginia job creators don’t need Washington working against them at every turn with more taxes, more regulations and counterproductive energy policies that drive up the price of fuel and electricity.  It’s time to take control of our destiny with positive, proven solutions to reinvigorate our economy, especially with small businesses which create the most jobs.”

In his Blueprint for America’s Comeback, George Allen outlines proven, pro-job growth solutions for creating jobs, reining in an overspending, over-regulating government and unleashing America’s abundant energy resources.  Reversing Washington’s counterproductive energy policies could create over a million new jobs, add over a trillion dollars in government revenue without raising taxes, promote national security, keep dollars in the United States, and help preserve our quality of life that is being threatened by high energy prices, and keep money in the USA.

In addition to McCray Electric Company President Dean McCray, Allen was joined by Dinwiddie Commonwealth Attorney Lisa Caruso in meeting with Dinwiddie and Tri-Cities area business owners for the small business roundtable.

“America is full of energy resources to power our success, but Washington is full of regulations that increase the cost of running a business, driving to work and buying supplies,” said Dean McCray, President of McCray Electric Company.  “Whether it’s high gas prices, EPA regulations or Cap and Trade plans, the policies President Obama and Tim Kaine support would reduce supply and drive up the price of electricity.  I agree with George Allen that we need to reduce Washington’s burdensome regulations and open up Virginia’s energy resources to utilize the electric power our communities need.”

“An overregulating Washington has set its target on the job creators in our community, sending down a steady stream of mandates on our energy, our health care, and our business procedures,” said Dinwiddie Commonwealth Attorney Lisa Caruso. “Energy regulations are a prime example of where Virginians need more freedom and less Washington in our lives.  We need George Allen in the U.S. Senate to fight destructive Washington overreach and to free our businesses and communities, allowing them to succeed with their own resources.”

Statement from George Allen on Tim Donner’s Endorsement

Statement from George Allen on Tim Donner’s Endorsement

Richmond, VA – Today, in a letter to supporters former candidate Tim Donner endorsed George Allen for U.S. Senate, praising Allen’s commitment to “reducing the size, scope and control of government.”  In response to the endorsement, George Allen issued the following statement:

“It is truly encouraging to have Tim Donner’s endorsement and his strong, thoughtful voice for the Constitutional values of Freedom, individual responsibility, limited government and opportunity for all.  Tim will be a most welcomed key, respected leader carrying our positive message of envisioning a better future for families and job creating small business owners.  Tim and I share the same serious concerns that America’s freedoms and opportunities are at risk because of an over-spending, over-regulating federal government.  We both want to see the repeal of Obamacare, while advancing personal health care options rather than government-rationed care.  This election will be pivotal in restoring the promise of the American Dream.  We will move ahead together, united for proven solutions to reinvigorate our economy with pro- job growth economic, reasonable regulatory and productive American energy development. I’m certain that Tim Donner’s passion for creative, common-sense conservative ideas will make him a persuasive advocate on our growing grassroots team.”

Susan Allen Holds Small Business Roundtable in Botetourt County

Botetourt County, VA – Susan Allen today campaigned in Staunton and Botetourt County, meeting with families and small business owners as part of her ongoing statewide travel in support of George Allen for U.S. Senate.  At noon, she participated in a Dutch Treat Lunch at Wright’s Dairy-Rite in Staunton, an original Drive-In restaurant serving residents and visitors for over 50 years.

Following the Dutch Treat lunch, Susan Allen hosted a small business roundtable in Daleville, Botetourt County.  Mrs. Allen heard from local small business owners and community leaders about the successes and challenges they are facing and discussed George Allen’s pro-jobs growth plan – the Blueprint for America’s Comeback – to get our nation’s economy back on track.  Attendees at the small business roundtable included Barbara Kolb, co-owner of Blue Ridge Vineyard in Eagle Rock, VA and Rud Peters, owner of The Landscape Store in Troutville, VA.

“It’s always a treat to be with the generous, hard-working people of Botetourt County and to see the beautiful natural landscapes of this region,” said Susan Allen. “George and I are optimistic about the future for Virginia and our country because we share a commitment with Virginians to fight for a future of less government and more individual freedom.  Small business owners are the building blocks of our communities, and their experience and insight is just what Washington needs to hear.  I’m proud of George’s plan to grow jobs by reducing taxes, spending and regulations coming out of Washington and unleashing our energy resources right here in Virginia.”

“It’s wonderful to have Susan Allen meet with us and to hear about George’s common-sense solutions for our nation to have a better future,” said Barbara Kolb, co-owner of Blue Ridge Vineyard.  “In a tough economy, the threat of higher taxes and more regulations from Washington burdens local farms and small businesses like mine with uncertainty.  I’m glad to hear from Susan Allen that George knows the solutions to our challenges lie right here in our community – not in Washington.”

“In the landscaping business, energy prices can make or break the ability to compete as the current high fuel prices drive up the business cost of deliveries,” said Rud Peters, owner of The Landscape Store. “Virginia small business owners need an advocate in Washington who will fight to reduce regulations and increase American-made energy to bring down the high price of fuel. I agree with George Allen that to get our economy going we need less Washington in our lives and more freedom to build our own success with our own natural resources and hard-earned dollars.”

George Allen Outlines Choice Facing Virginians in November

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 28, 2012

George Allen Outlines Choice Facing Virginians in November

Roanoke, VA – Today, George Allen participated in a Republican primary debate in Roanoke, Virginia, organized by the Republican Party of Virginia. Allen utilized the opportunity to talk about his optimism and positive solutions for a better future in America – one where every American has the freedom to learn, work, start a business and raise a family unhindered by an overreaching federal government. Following the debate, Delegate Greg Habeeb (R-Salem) and State Senator Ralph Smith (R-Roanoke) issued the following statements:

“This debate reminds all Virginians that the November election is a choice between two futures,” said Delegate Greg Habeeb.  “We have a choice between more government, higher taxes and fewer jobs under Tim Kaine or George Allen’s proven record of reducing tax burdens, cutting regulations and creating jobs in Virginia. Virginians have already endured Tim Kaine’s failed economic policies, and we need George Allen in the U.S. Senate with his positive solutions to get America back on track.”

“I’m glad that this debate helped more Virginians hear about George Allen’s vision, ideas and solutions for reining in the government and empowering small businesses and families throughout Virginia,” said Senator Ralph Smith.  “George Allen is the only candidate in this race with an economic record that created 300,000 net new jobs and cut taxes over $600 million for Virginians. While some people say that Washington is too polarized to get anything constructive done, George Allen has a proven record of working with people of both parties to bring positive solutions to Virginia.  Now we need his leadership in the U.S. Senate.”

George Allen Calls for Responsible Higher Education Student Loan Interest Rate Extension

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 26, 2012

George Allen Calls for Responsible Higher Education Student Loan Interest Rate Extension

Henrico, VA – George Allen today released the following statement calling for Congress to extend the higher education student loan interest rates established under The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. Without congressional action, some higher education loan interest rates will double after June 30, 2012.

“For too many Virginians, the dream of a college education now no longer leads to the promise of a job. In this weak economy, many are now graduating without jobs and loaded down with debt.

“When nearly half of college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, we need to be creating jobs for young people, not increasing their debt. Washington needs to extend the student loan rates and fund the extension by consolidating or eliminating duplicative, wasteful government programs and policies. There’s no reason Washington can’t work together for a bipartisan solution and find savings to invest in education.

“As Governor, I worked with a Democratic-controlled legislature to make higher education a priority. We capped and froze tuition to save Virginia families thousands of dollars and added over $170 million to higher education. I invested in education because I understand that education empowers individuals to succeed and provides the educated workforce that attracts businesses to invest and create jobs in Virginia.

“My opponent likes to talk about building talent, but by his own admission he made ‘significant’ cuts to higher education funding as Governor. Tim Kaine’s cuts to higher education drove up tuition costs at four-year institutions by over 30 percent and placed an even greater financial burden on Virginia students and families.

“Washington needs to set aside its differences and work together to help protect the American Dream of going to college and finding a job.”

ICYMI: It’s time for America to make a grand comeback (From the Richmond Times-Dispatch)

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
It’s time for America to make a grand comeback
From the Richmond Times-Dispatch

By George Allen
Thursday, April 26, 2012

America has always been energized by the power of ideas, the decency of its people, and the unifying passion of a purpose in our lives and blessed country. Although we’ve faced many challenges, we have always risen to overcome them.

As a result, America is known throughout the world for its extraordinary courage: To come together. To stand in harm’s way. To speak out. To reach for new heights. And to never, ever give up.

With millions unemployed and an economy sputtering, many people today have seen their dreams diminished. Parents don’t know if their children will enjoy the same opportunities they had growing up. And entrepreneurs are worried Washington will make it impossible for their business to survive or be passed on to their children.

These stories are being told all across Virginia and the nation. And though they’re very real stories of our present, they don’t have to be prevalent stories in our future.

The power of our nation’s purpose remains as strong as ever and that fight for America’s future is ours to win. We need people in Washington who share America’s vision for the three ideals most of us still want our nation to be: free, strong, and a beacon.

In many ways, this election is about the freedom that made America great and prosperous. Freedom to start and grow a small business. Freedom to choose the doctors and medical care we want. Freedom to practice our religion and uphold our moral traditions. Freedom to use our plentiful energy resources to control our destiny for job growth and more affordable fuel, food and electricity. Freedom to make local decisions. Freedom from a bloated, debt-ridden intrusive government that not even the richest country on Earth can afford.

We are currently on a dangerous path for our nation and our families. With every new tax, regulation and mandate our country grows less free and less prosperous.

America’s citizens — not a distant, unaccountable government — are most capable of making the decisions for ourselves and our families.

Washington powers are wrong — and this November, we must stand together to tell them so. …
