New Web Video: “I’m Doing What The President Wants Me To Do”

Henrico, VA – On the eve of the third anniversary of the passage of the failed $800 billion stimulus, the George Allen for U.S. Senate Campaign today released its newest web video entitled, “I’m Doing What The President Wants Me To Do,” highlighting Tim Kaine’s loyal, unabashed support for President Obama and his agenda, which has led to an unprecedented spending binge in Washington over the last three years.

Chairman Kaine campaigned across the nation claiming the $800 billion failed stimulus would “help jumpstart the economy” as well as “create or save over 3 million jobs.”   Instead, Americans have endured 36 straight months of unemployment over 8%, Washington is now borrowing $48,000 a second, and we have seen the first ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating.

“’I'm doing what the President wants me to do,’ those are Tim Kaine’s words, not mine.  On every major issue over the past several years, Chairman Kaine has been in lockstep with President Obama and out of step with Virginia families and small business owners,” said Dan Allen, Allen campaign senior advisor.  “And now he’s running to be President Obama’s Senator, not Virginia’s.”

George Allen Commends U.S. Navy Decision to Cancel Aircraft Carrier Move

Henrico, VA – George Allen released the following statement today on the announcement that the United States Navy has canceled its plans to move a Norfolk stationed nuclear-powered aircraft carrier (CVN) to Mayport, FL:

“Common-sense has prevailed with the Navy cancelling plans to move a nuclear carrier group to Florida.  Today’s announcement is a victory for the Hampton Roads region and the Virginia military families that depend on the thousands of jobs that the carrier supports.  I commend the hard work of Congressman Randy Forbes (VA-04), Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), and Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02).

“Our military is facing the prospect of devastating cuts because of Washington’s inability to do its job and control spending.  For the U.S. Navy to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to update a base in Florida when it is strategically unnecessary would have been an irresponsible waste of taxpayer dollars for purely political purposes.  National defense is and must be the top priority of the federal government, and Virginia is blessed to have significant bases for all branches of our military, including the largest Naval base in Norfolk, the CIA and the Pentagon.   Washington’s focus should be ensuring that our men and women in uniform have all the resources they need to defend our country and keeping our promises to the veterans who have bravely served.”

Henrico, VA – George Allen today issued the following statement on President Obama’s announcement regarding the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) health care mandate:

“This continued arrogant and absurd proposal by the Obama Administration doesn’t make realistic economic or principled sense.  I would not support prohibiting contraceptives, nor is that the issue. This is an issue of the government overriding the First Amendment and dictating to religious organizations that they must provide services which are contrary to their deeply held beliefs. This latest political gimmick from Washington fails to address the intrusive government overreach in this health care monstrosity and shows among many reasons why Obamacare must be repealed and replaced.

“The federal government should not be dictating to small businesses, insurance companies, patients, doctors, religious organizations or anyone else what kind of health care coverage they are required to buy.  The fact that my opponent, Tim Kaine, is cheering today’s political maneuver by this Administration underscores his continued misunderstanding of the harmful impact it’s having on seniors, families, employees, health care providers and small businesses in Virginia, while adding to our national debt. Tim Kaine believes Obamacare is a ‘great achievement.’  I believe it ought to be repealed.”

Henrico, VA – George Allen released the following statement today on yesterday’s passage of legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee that would allow for the exploration and production energy resources off of Virginia’s coast.

“I commend the decision by the House Natural Resources Committee to move forward legislation that will allow for the exploration and production of Virginia’s oil and natural gas reserves.   Congress should act quickly to advance this legislation, and consequently jobs and affordable energy for America’s families and businesses.

“From our coalfields to off our coast, Virginians are ready and willing to provide the energy we need to power our Commonwealth and country. Unleashing our plentiful energy resources will create thousands of new, good paying jobs here in Virginia, increase our supply of affordable fuel and electricity, keep our money here in the U.S.A. and generate revenues for the government – without raising taxes.  And those royalties ought to be shared with Virginia for roads and transportation.

“It is time for Washington to stop standing in our way.  The counterproductive, punishing energy policies imposed by the Obama administration have been a constant impediment to thousands of good-paying American jobs and more affordable energy.   Keeping these resources off-limits will only lead to even higher fuel costs and do more damage to families, small businesses and America’s competitiveness.”

Traveling throughout Virginia I have had the privilege to listen to many true job creators – the small business owners of Virginia. They are our country’s innovators and the future of our economy and I have deep admiration for their courage and optimistic spirit.

But whether they are from Clarksville or Manassas, Bristol or Chesapeake, or Winchester to Virginia Beach have heard similar concerns that the federal government has become an obstacle to Virginia’s small businesses.

The three years since President Obama took office have not been good to the families and small businessmen and women of Virginia.

Washington’s explosive government spending and borrowing binge has swelled the national debt to a shocking $15.2 trillion. This irresponsible behavior undermines our economy and led to the downgraded creditworthiness of our country for the first time in U.S. history.

The President’s counterproductive energy policies have contributed to the high price of gasoline which has risen from an average of $1.85 in January 2009 to $3.39 today. That translates to an extra $25 to $30 out of the pocket of Virginia families each and every time they fill up their gas tank. And the higher gasoline prices are having a real impact on businesses engaged in tourism, the food industry, shipping, farming, and especially families that live in the suburbs and rural areas.

The Obama Administration has pushed thousands of costly regulations and imposed project labor agreements labor contract requirements that direct federal contracts to unionized companies, of which few are small businesses.

Washington’s most egregious over-reach is the new government-controlled health care law. Obamacare comes up in conversations everywhere I go.

Small business leaders say that the uncertainties and costs associated with Obamacare’s regulations and mandates are hampering or will impede their ability to hire and expand their businesses.

Given this record, it is not surprising that small businesses – which in good times create 70 percent of all jobs in America – has lost 2.5 million jobs under President Obama’s watch. Nor is it surprising that our nation has seen 35 consecutive months of unemployment above 8 percent since Mr. Obama became President. After all, American small business is the best job creation machine but the policies coming out of Washington have thrown up barriers and damaged their ability to create new jobs.

Small business is so crucial to our nation’s strength and prosperity. Therefore, I believe we must and can work together in Washington to get America creating jobs again.

By focusing on the vitality of small business, we can reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit of America. Gone will be obstacles, interference, and crippling costs. In their place, we will have positive tax, reasonable regulatory, productive energy, and empowering education policies that will give Americans a competitive advantage for jobs, investment, and prosperity. …

“Tonight, millions were hoping to hear President Obama deliver a new vision for a better future for our nation and our economy.  Instead, we heard campaign-type promises and advocacy for the same failed agenda. The sad facts remain that his Administration’s counter-productive energy, as well as regulatory, tax and spending policies have Americans enduring 35 straight months with unemployment over 8 percent, high gasoline prices costing us $30 more for each fill-up and downgraded creditworthiness for the first time in U.S. history.

“I envision a better future than what we are experiencing now in the ‘State of our Nation.’  In the heart and spirit of the American people, there is a reservoir of optimism and belief in our ability to achieve the American Dream.  Americans share my view that we should be limited only by our imagination, ingenuity and hard work. We must provide Americans with a competitive advantage for more jobs and investment; unleash our plentiful energy resources and creativity; and rein in the overreaching, overspending federal government.

“I wish the President’s actions truly followed Abraham Lincoln’s words of limited, focused government. The chief responsibility of the federal government is our national defense and we all appreciate our troops, veterans and their families.

“While his statement regarding energy efficiency in buildings is a worthy goal, I also hope he will allow Virginia to produce natural gas and oil off our coast.
