Tax Day: America’s Tax System needs to be more Simple, Fair & Competitive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Statement from George Allen on Tax Day

Henrico, VA – As millions of Americans file their taxes, George Allen released the following statement today on Tax Day:

“Today serves as a stark reminder to millions of families and businesses throughout the country that complying with Washington’s burdensome tax system has become far too complicated, stressful and costly.  It is the American taxpayers who own and pay for our country and it is time we reform the tax system by making it much more simple, fair and competitive for all American individuals, families and businesses.

“America has the highest tax on job creating businesses in the world and there are some in Washington who want to raise taxes on families and small businesses for more Government spending.   With 38 consecutive months of unemployment above 8%, America’s creditworthiness downgraded for the first time in history, and other countries lowering their tax rates – we can’t let the federal government tax America out of the competition.  Higher taxes will not create jobs or reduce rising fuel prices, but they will stifle our job creating businesses.

“Now is the time for Washington to put aside the political gimmicks and reach constructive bi-partisan solutions that will simplify the federal tax system and once again make America competitive for jobs and investments.”

Prince William County GOP Convention

Susan and I started the day at the Prince William County GOP Convention at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas where I spoke to a fired-up and enthusiastic crowd of Republicans.  Prince William County will play a pivotal role in this upcoming election and today they are ready to work hard for victory in November.  It was also great to see so many working moms in the crowd – and anyone who is a mom, is a working mom – they understand what ails this country as well as anyone.

When I was Governor I worked with Republicans and Democrats alike to send a message to the rest of the country that ‘Virginia was Open for Business!’  During my term we implemented pro-growth policies that helped create more than 300,000 net-new private sector jobs and were consistently rated among the top States to do business.  This election is about bringing those proven, pro-job growth policies to Washington so we can send a message to the rest of the world that ‘America is Open for Business Again!’

Susan and I also stopped by the Manassas Park Police Department, where we met with several of the hard-working, dedicated and tireless police officers for a tour of their facility.  One of the officers spoke about my Truth in Sentencing legislation, saying it was one of the most helpful and most beneficial pieces of legislation he has seen throughout the his entire career.  Another officer was a volunteer from the Department of Defense and was grateful that Virginia gave him that opportunity to serve.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is fortunate to have so many hard-working, dedicated and tireless law enforcement officers.  They are heroic in the face of danger and unflinching in their commitment to protect our families and communities.

Fairfax News: George Allen Greets Vets in Springfield

Republican Senate candidate George Allen held a Veterans Issues Forum with Delegate Scott Lingamfelter at American Legion Post 176 in Springfield today, where he continued his ongoing conversations with Virginia Veterans and military families.

“America enjoys her freedom today because of the brave men and women in our military who are willing to stand strong for it,” said George Allen.  “Our serving active, guard, and reserve forces, our Veterans, and our retirees should not have to be concerned about whether their service will be recognized nor worry about whether they and their families will be afforded the benefits they have earned.  I will work to ensure that America always honors their service by keeping her promises to our Veterans and their families.”

Concerns presented by the veterans included unemployment among veterans, job credentialing for truck drivers and trades from electricians to welders to health services and IT technicians.

“I want to provide the leadership to make certain that federal agencies adhere to procurement and employment goals,” said George Allen.  “And I want to facilitate best practices for credentialing and certifying Veterans for transitioning into the private sector.”

“I’ve known George Allen for about 20 years and he has always stood strong for Veterans, our men and women on active duty, those in reserves and the National Guard and the thousands of military families throughout Virginia,” said Co-Chair of Veterans for Allen, Delegate Scott Lingamfelter. “He has been a strong leader and advocate for Veterans issues and he knows as well as anyone the importance of keeping America’s promises.  George Allen is a friend to Veterans in Virginia and across our nation and we need him fighting for us in the U.S. Senate.”

The Forum produced a wide-ranging discussion about jobs for veterans leaving the service, procurement, defense priorities, energy security and what Allen called Washington’s misguided priorities.

George Allen and Delegate Michael Webert Discuss Rising Gasoline Prices in Shenandoah County

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

George Allen and Delegate Michael Webert Discuss Rising Gasoline Prices in Shenandoah County

Strasburg, VA – Today, George Allen joined Delegate Michael Webert at the 7-11 in Strasburg to discuss how rising gasoline prices are adversely impacting the people of the Shenandoah Valley.  Last week Allen launched www.TooMuchAtThePump.com to highlight how gasoline prices have more than doubled since President Obama took office and Tim Kaine was chosen as his Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.  Some families and businesses are now paying nearly $40 more every time they fill up a 20 gallon tank.

“The families, small business owners and farmers here in Shenandoah County who are trying to figure out how to pay these astronomical gasoline and diesel prices understand how energy prices touch every aspect of our economy,” said George Allen.  “Think what people would do with an extra $30 or $40 each time they fill up – they could spend it at a local restaurant, put it into savings for their children’s college education, or use it to buy local products or goods.  If we unleash our plentiful energy resources we would not only have more affordable fuel, food and electricity – we could have an industrial renaissance in America that would make us more competitive for investment and jobs.”
“We’ve seen gasoline prices skyrocket, yet Washington continues to ignore the families, farms and businesses in communities like ours that are often hit the hardest by these rising costs,” said Delegate Michael Webert. “Many of my constituents have to drive long distances each day to and from work, and the high gas prices, which are about $3.75 per gallon here in Shenandoah, are taking a serious toll on our budgets. As a farmer, I understand how the high price of fuel affects our bottom line.  And while Virginians struggle, Tim Kaine and President Obama continue to say no to increasing our supply of affordable energy and the jobs that would come with it.  George Allen will bring our voices to Washington with decisive leadership to help ease the burden of these high gasoline prices over the long-term by using all of our resources to help create new jobs and make America more energy secure.”

In his Blueprint for America’s Comeback, George Allen advocates unleashing our plentiful energy resources and removing many self-imposed barriers to energy production to create hundreds of thousands of new, good-paying jobs, increase our supply of affordable energy, make us less vulnerable to outside forces, generate revenues to the government – without raising taxes – and keep our money here in the U.S.A.

Visit www.TooMuchAtThePump.com to find out how much more you’re paying every time you fill-up your tank.

Chesterfield County GOP 2012 Central Virginia Lincoln-Reagan Dinner

Susan and I had a wonderful time at the Chesterfield County GOP 2012 Central Virginia Lincoln-Reagan Dinner – it was great to be back in our old home county. Virginians have always played a major role in shaping the course of history and I believe the elections in 2012 will be pivotal in shaping history again. Chesterfield Republicans are energized and ready to win!

RTD: Obama targets tobacco – and Virginia jobs

As Governor, I promoted Virginia farmers and businesses throughout the world from Egypt and Europe to Mexico and Asia. We need to expand opportunities. Our government should not discriminate against Virginia farmers and businesses.

Obama targets tobacco – and Virginia jobs

By Barry DuVal

Richmond Times Dispatch

In today’s global economy, American producers face increasingly intense competition for access to major markets from other producers around the world. At a time of such economic turmoil, it is imperative that the Obama administration pursue every avenue to enhance America’s competitiveness and open opportunities for American products in the world’s leading markets. The administration’s consideration of a proposal to exclude tobacco exports from an important free-trade deal with Asian-Pacific countries is a step in the wrong direction and cause for serious concern.

On March 1, the Obama administration’s trade representatives will travel to Melbourne, Australia, to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), a multi-lateral free-trade agreement between Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States.

This trade agreement represents an enormous opportunity for the American economy to reach some of the fastest-growing markets in the world. The nine countries currently negotiating the agreement constitute 40 percent of global trade, and the United States’ negotiating partners account for 60 percent of all U.S. exports and 75 percent of our agricultural exports.

The Obama administration should be commended for taking the initiative to foster a more productive trading relationship with the critically important Asian-Pacific region. However, American companies and producers should be alarmed by certain provisions under consideration by the administration that would exclude all tobacco leaf and tobacco products from the agreement or from important protections being offered to other products.

These exclusions would have disastrous consequences for the thousands of farmers in Virginia’s tobacco-growing regions, not to mention the local economies that are built on the foundation of tobacco production. Depriving Virginia’s tobacco farmers of access to the most important markets in the global economy will destroy farming jobs all across Southside and Southwest Virginia and threaten the livelihood of these communities.

Roanoke Area Veterans Forum

It was a privilege and an honor for me to speak to the veterans in the Roanoke area – not as a member of their ranks – but as a Virginian and an American who feels tremendous respect for the sacrifices that our veterans and their families have endured to protect our country and our freedoms.

We must have the will, the skill, & the firepower to keep America strong for Freedom – and America should always keep our promises to our veterans for the benefits and health care they have earned. It’s not an entitlement, it’s a promise.  I have pledged to always fight on behalf of veterans and their families to honor their enduring, consistent service to America, commitment to their community and to the defense of our Country.  Click here to read my Compact with Veterans: Honoring the Men and Women Who Stand Strong for Freedom.

Roanoke Times: George Allen visits Coca-Cola bottling plant, City Market building on pass through Roanoke

George Allen visits Coca-Cola bottling plant, City Market building on pass through Roanoke

by Mason Adams

U.S. Senate candidate George Allen is pushing ahead with a campaign that seems to be aimed solely at Democrat Tim Kaine. During a stop at the City Market Building in Roanoke today, Allen took a couple of shots at Kaine but didn’t mention any of his fellow Republicans running for the GOP nomination.

The Allen campaign also released a web video trying to tie Kaine to President Barack Obama — a tactic it’s used for months and will likely continue up through election day. (For his part, Kaine is hitting Allen on his term in the Senate and also trying to tie him to the social legislation currently in the General Assembly.)

Allen’s spending more time in western Virginia this week, speaking to veterans at a breakfast tomorrow morning in Vinton before swinging down through Pulaski, Wytheville, Bristol, Abingdon, Hillsville, Patrick County, Martinsville and Danville.

Allen continued to call for “unleashing America’s energy resources” by cutting back on regulations. He called for extension of the Keystone XL pipleline from Canada to the midwest.
