Former Virginia Sen. George Allen was in the area Friday stumping to regain his old seat in the U.S. Senate.

Allen is running against former Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, for the seat that Sen. Jim Webb will leave open at the end of his current term in 2012, since he has decided not to seek reelection.

Webb beat Allen in a Senate race in 2006.

Allen, a Republican, visited Micron Technology, where he held a town hallstyle meeting closed to reporters.

In an interview after the meeting, Allen said he got questions about energy, constitutional amendments, regulation and immigration.

Allen, who favors offshore drilling and coal, said using alternative energy is fine as far as it goes, but right now it can’t support the country’s energy needs “The alternatives are all fine, but the main criteria I have is what’s affordable and reliable and preferably American,” he said. “If we were allowed to explore off our coast, we’d get 37 percent of the royalties — by my proposal — and we’d use that for roads and transportation.”

Today’s Town Hall at Micron Technology

It was great to be back at Micron Technology today — a prime example of Virginia’s leadership in cutting edge technology and innovation. I had the opportunity to get a tour and talk with over 100 employees about the importance of creating an economic environment that will spur job growth and innovation.

Before we recruited Dominion Semiconductor (now Micron) to Manassas, there were no computer memory chips manufactured in Virginia – now, they’re one of our top exports. And we did it by creating the right economic environment with reduced taxes, less regulations and prompt permitting to encourage the investment necessary to help create hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs throughout all the Commonwealth.

Today Micron employs more than 1,800 Virginians in their Manassas facility, supporting over 2,200 full-time equivalent Virginia jobs and adding more than $387 million to Virginia’s economy annually.

They are showing that Virginia and America can compete with anyone in the world.

George Allen Holds Town Hall At Micron Technology

Henrico, VA – Today George Allen toured and held a town hall at Micron Technology, a leading global manufacturer of semiconductor solutions in Manassas, Virginia, where he spoke with more than 100 Micron employees about spurring job creation and the importance of leadership in innovation and technology.

As Governor, George Allen helped recruit Dominion Semiconductor to Virginia in 1995, making it the first joint semiconductor manufacturing investment in the United States, and importantly the first semiconductor fabrication facility in Virginia history.  In 2002, Dominion Semiconductor was acquired by Micron Technology and today is the second largest employer in the City of Manassas.

“It is invigorating to be back at Micron Technology today – which is a prime example of Virginia’s leadership in cutting edge technology and innovation,” said George Allen.  “Before we recruited Dominion Semiconductor to Manassas, there were no computer memory chips manufactured in Virginia – now, they’re one of our top exports.  And we did it by creating the right economic environment with reduced taxes, less regulations and prompt permitting to encourage the investment necessary to help create hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs throughout all the Commonwealth.”

“It’s time for an American Comeback to make our country the World Capital of Innovation again.  To do that, we need to face our challenges head-on, make America more competitive with pro-growth policies to spur innovation and send a message to the rest of the world that ‘America is Open for Business’ again,” Allen continued.  “With the right economic, energy and education policies that empower small businesses and entrepreneurs – not the federal government – and incentivize our young people to get interested and educated in science, engineering and technology, we can restart our economic engines and make sure Virginia and America remains the best place in the world to live, learn, invest, work and raise our families.”

Currently, Micron Technologies employs more than 1,800 people in their Manassas facility, supporting over 2,200 full-time equivalent Virginia jobs and adding more than $387 million to Virginia’s economy annually.  To date, Micron has invested more than $3.4 billion and growing in Virginia’s economy.
