Independent Messenger: Allen Campaign Visit Highlights High Cost of Energy

By Don Koralewski, April 24, 2012

Former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen stopped by Sadler Travel Plaza on Monday afternoon and spoke with a small but inquisitive audience for the better part of an hour.

“I’m here and talk about fuel prices,” said Allen. “Prices here are high, and one of the things — if people hire me on to serve them in the U.S. Senate — one of the key issues I’m going to be like a dog on a bone on is energy.

“We ought to be thanking God that we’re blessed with more energy resources tan any [other] country.”

George Allen Hears from Small Businesses, Talks Jobs in Southside

Today, George Allen continued his ongoing conversation with Virginia families and small businesses in Clarksville in Mecklenburg County, South Boston in Halifax County and Danville in Pittsylvania County, where he toured several small businesses, held discussions with local small business leaders and held a town-hall style meeting at Mary’s Diner, a local restaurant in Danville hit hard by high gasoline prices and uncertainty about the future.  George Allen has been travelling throughout Virginia listening to the concerns of hard-working men and women and speaking about proven solutions in his Blueprint for America’s Comeback.

“The families, farmers and small business owners in Southern Virginia from Mecklenburg County, South Boston, Danville and Pittsylvania County are the ones who feel the pain of punishing energy policies and burdensome regulations from Washington,” said George Allen.  “We need to send a message that ‘America is Open for Business Again’ with a more simple, fair and competitive tax system and reasonable regulatory and productive energy policies to empower small businesses – America’s job creators – to expand and hire.  Having affordable, reliable electricity matters a great deal to attracting investment in new data centers where electricity rates can make up the majority of their operating costs.”

Allen began the day with a small business roundtable discussion sponsored by the Mecklenburg Chamber of Commerce. He then toured the Microsoft Data Center in Boydton and Lindstrand USA in South Boston before holding a town-hall style lunch at Ernie’s Restaurant in South Boston. Allen concluded the day by touring the JTI Leaf Services facility and hosting another small business roundtable at Mary’s Diner in Danville.

Delegate Tommy Wright (R-Lunenburg) joined him at the Mecklenburg Small Business Roundtable Roundtable and spoke about the impact of Washington’s policies and his support for George Allen’s strong leadership.

“I’m proud to join George Allen in meeting with the hard-working, inspiring people of Southside Virginia,” said Delegate Tommy Wright.  “Our region feels the pain of lost jobs and higher prices as small businesses and families struggle to balance the books and fill up their gas tanks. Washington’s taxes and regulations are standing in the way of more energy and more jobs, and we need George Allen’s strong leadership and record of results in the U.S. Senate to fight for less government – not more.”

Talking to tobacco farmers in Mecklenburg County, and JTI Leaf Services, a tobacco procurement and processing company in Danville, Allen reflected on the pride he took as Governor in promoting Virginia’s agricultural products. Allen also addressed the possibility that the Obama Administration would exclude tobacco from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement.

“If the Obama Administration excludes Virginia and American grown tobacco from trade agreements, it would hurt farmers here in Virginia and make all American tobacco growers less competitive around the world,” said Allen.  “As Governor, I took pride in promoting Virginia agricultural products, from tobacco to peanuts to poultry, and businesses throughout the world. The federal government should be looking to expand opportunities for Virginia farmers and businesses in the global market, not discriminate against them.”

As George Allen concluded the day at Mary’s Diner where he discussed how high gas prices touch every sector of the economy, owner Elene Farlow said that she sees every day how her business and employees are suffering with these high fuel costs.

“High gas prices are a huge detriment to our business,” said Elene Farlow, owner of Mary’s Diner in Danville.  “Not only do we see fewer customers going out to eat, but because of the increased cost of food and fuel, we couldn’t compete with the other bids for service to Martinsville.  George Allen understands how high energy costs impact a small business like ours, and I know he’ll work in Washington to reduce gas prices and give us some relief.”

George Allen and the Sadler Family Discuss High Gasoline Prices in Emporia

Today, George Allen joined Senator Frank Ruff (R-Clarksville), local business owner Herman Sadler, NASCAR driver and media analyst Hermie Sadler, NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler and City Council Member Woody Harris at the Sadler Travel Plaza in Emporia to discuss the adverse impact of high gasoline prices on families and businesses and positive solutions to reduce the pain at the pump.

“High fuel and energy costs touch nearly every sector of our economy and strain the budgets of hard-working families and small businesses here in Emporia and throughout Virginia,” said George Allen.  “Everywhere I go I hear similar stories about how these high prices are causing people to cut back, forcing small business owners to pay burdensome fuel surcharges on deliveries and increasing the cost of food and groceries for families.  It doesn’t have to be this way.  Virginians are ready and willing to produce the energy to power our nation — the only thing missing is the political will in Washington.  It’s time to come together to unleash our plentiful energy resources and provide needed relief for those families and businesses paying as much as $30 more every time they fill-up the tank.”

Senator Frank Ruff echoed Allen’s calls for energy action and spoke about how the people of his district are suffering under Washington’s out-of-touch policies.

“The high gasoline prices families and businesses in Emporia and Southern Virginia are seeing are the result of out-of-touch policies in Washington that fail to address our nation’s energy crisis in a serious way,” said Senator Frank Ruff.  “Tim Kaine and President Obama claim to support an ‘all of the above’ approach to energy, but the White House continues to delay oil and natural gas production off our coast.  Washington should be doing all it can to increase our supply of affordable energy and reduce prices at the pump.  Virginians have heard enough of the empty political slogans and endless excuses for near $4 gasoline. George Allen has a plan to unleash our energy resources, and he’s the leader we need in Washington to take action.”

NASCAR driver and media analyst Hermie Sadler spoke from his perspective as a restaurant owner about how today’s high fuel prices are impacting those who work in the restaurant industry.  “As a small business owner, I have seen firsthand how gas prices are affecting families in this area.  They have less money to buy essentials, travel, or even go out to dinner,” said Hermie Sadler. “My wife and I own a restaurant and my employees are seeing smaller tips because folks are forced to cut back.  With many servers relying on those tips as a large percentage of their income, they may have to take extra shifts or even another job to make up the difference.  These high gasoline prices are really hurting families, and I hope that with George Allen’s leadership in the U.S. Senate we can finally get an energy policy that focuses on the working families and business owners who are so often the hardest hit with high prices.”

Susan Allen Tours Women-Owned Small Businesses in Stafford County and Fredericksburg

Today Susan Allen visited small businesses in Stafford County and Fredericksburg, VA, continuing her statewide travels to listen to Virginians and discuss her support for her husband George Allen.  Along with Susan Stimpson, Stafford County Board of Supervisors Chairman, she toured The Icing Cakes in Stafford, VA, a small business that owner Lynette Drake established 14 years ago with a commitment to community investment and charity.  They also visited CB Harris & Company Inc. in Fredericksburg, an award-winning, woman-owned management services firm.  In addition to the business tours, Susan Allen and Chairman Stimpson met with Susan Spears, President of the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m always thrilled to meet with the hard-working and energetic people of Stafford County and Fredericksburg,” said Susan Allen. “As I talk with women business owners, I’m inspired by their vision and determination to succeed and provide a brighter future for their families, community and nation. From the workplace to the home, women understand firsthand how government regulations and high gas prices are stifling business opportunities and straining budgets.  I know George shares Virginians’ call for less government intrusion in their businesses, homes and pocketbooks, and that is why he is working to bring our voices and values back to the U.S. Senate.”

“As Chairman of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, I see the opportunities and challenges our community faces as small businesses, schools, farms and families aim for success under a cloud of Washington overreach,” said Susan Stimpson. “Virginia needs George Allen as an advocate in the U.S. Senate to lower taxes, reduce regulations and support real American energy solutions to free up our community to succeed.”

“I was excited to talk with Susan Allen and hear about her husband’s positive and proven solutions for getting America back on track,” said Lynette Drake, owner of The Icing Cakes in Stafford County. “Rising gas prices affect businesses like mine in more ways than Washington seems to know — whether it’s fuel surcharges on deliveries or the amount people will spend on food if gas prices are higher. George Allen is dedicated to helping small businesses by unleashing our energy resources here in Virginia and keeping burdensome government regulations at bay.”

Following the small business tours and meetings, Susan Allen will headline a Dutch-Treat Dinner with Chairman Stimpson at Amy’s Café and the Falls Run Republican Committee Meeting to conclude her day.

George and Susan Allen Meet with Veterans, Small Businesses and the Virginia Federation of Republican Women

I just wrapped up an invigorating and productive day campaigning with Susan in Richmond, Hampton and finishing in Williamsburg, where I spoke to a lively crowd of Republican women at the Virginia Federation of Republican Women Annual Convention!  The women of the VFRW work extremely hard for Republican candidates. They have been a key part in each and every campaign I have run and they will play a crucial role in the upcoming pivotal elections.  I look forward to again engaging these active, patriotic women from NoVA to Chesapeake and Virginia Beach to the Williamsburg area, Central, Southside, Piedmont and Southwest Virginia this year as we work to bring our positive vision for a better future to the U.S. Senate.

George and Susan Allen speaking with Veterans at the Virginia War Memorial

Earlier today, Susan and I visited the Virginia War Memorial, which is a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of Freedom.  While there we met and listened to Richmond-area Veterans about issues they are facing.  Veterans and their families have my personal commitment to steadfastly advocate for their concerns and America keeping her promises for benefits they’ve honorably earned in service to our country. Susan’s father was a Lt. Colonel who served two tours in Vietnam. She spoke about growing up in a military family and how family members and dependents of those serving also feel the strain and stress of service to our nation.  When I pledge my commitment to Veterans, I am making that same commitment to their families as well.

After the forum, Susan and I stopped by Anna’s Italian Pizza restaurant to see Mima and Franco, two small business owners who are doing their best to overcome the challenges of this difficult economy.  Mima said that the high cost of gasoline has taken a significant toll.  She has had to pay fuel surcharges on deliveries and high gasoline prices have hit family household budgets, so far fewer people can afford to come to their restaurant, which has been operated by her family for 42 years.

While in Hampton we also met three generations of the friendly Woods family and got their fresh Hampton-grown strawberries at the Wood’s Orchards Farm Market and visited Beach Hardware, a local hardware store owned by the Mitchell family.

George and Susan Allen Hold Veterans Issues Forum at the Virginia War Memorial

Today, George and Susan Allen hosted a Veterans Issues Forum at the Paul & Phyllis Galanti Education Center at the Virginia War Memorial, where they each listened to shared concerns from Richmond-area Veterans and spoke about their respect for the service and sacrifice of all military families.

George Allen also discussed his Compact with Veterans to honor the men and women who stand strong for freedom and his continued commitment to ensuring our nation keeps its promises to those who have served and sacrificed and those who are currently serving.

George and Susan Allen talking with Veterans in Richmond

“It is an honor to gather here at the Virginia War Memorial, a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said George Allen.  “We owe it to those who have fallen to remember their selfless acts and carry on their spirit by keeping America strong for freedom.  Veterans and their families have my personal commitment to steadfastly advocate for their concerns and America keeping her promises to our veterans and their families for the benefits they’ve honorably earned in service to our country.”

Susan Allen, whose father was a Lt. Colonel in the Marine Corps and did two tours in Vietnam, spoke about her experiences growing up in a military family and how all military families are involved in the same service and sacrifice.

“I grew up in a military family and George and I understand the sacrifice and emotional strain isn’t just limited to the person on active duty,” said Susan Allen. “We were all part of the military community. We were tied together with strong bonds of friendship, as well as the daily stress for loved ones who may have been in harm’s way.  When George pledges his commitment to Veterans, he is also speaking about family members and dependents who are making their own sacrifices for our nation.”

“George Allen has stood strong for the concerns of Veterans and military families before and I know he will be a committed partner and advocate for our voices in Washington again,” said Bob Sussan, American Legion and VFW life member. “He understands and shares the same concerns that Veterans and military families throughout Virginia and America are facing.  Whether it’s the steep increases in fees in Tricare or the drastic and devastating cuts to national defense, I know George Allen will fight for our values in Washington and make sure America never breaks those sacred promises she has made to our men and women in uniform and our families.”

George Allen and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) Host Small Business Roundtable at Bill’s Barbecue in Richmond

Today, George Allen and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) met with small business leaders at a roundtable discussion at Bill’s Barbecue in Richmond, where Allen outlined his positive vision for Virginia and his Blueprint for America’s Comeback.  This is the latest in a series of town hall-style meetings where George Allen heard from local business leaders about their concerns and discussed his proven solutions to create jobs, reduce gasoline prices and make America competitive again.

In opening remarks, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) announced his endorsement of George Allen and spoke from his perspective as a small business owner why he’s looking forward to working with him as a partner in the U.S. Senate.

Senator Johnson and George Allen talking with Small Business leaders at Bill's Barbecue

“After spending 31 years in the manufacturing business, I have experienced first-hand the burden Washington places on small businesses,” said Senator Ron Johnson. “We need more like-minded allies in Washington who know we can’t borrow, tax and spend our way to prosperity.  George Allen has a record of standing up for job-creators and fighting against Washington’s job-destroying regulations and overspending that is threatening the survival of small businesses in Virginia and across the country.  I look forward to having George Allen as a partner in the U.S. Senate.”

“It’s time for Washington to start listening to the small business owners and entrepreneurs here in Virginia and come together to eliminate the burdensome regulations stifling the very job-creators we need to reinvigorate our economy,” said George Allen.  “Massive tax hikes, burdensome regulations and Washington political gimmicks won’t do anything to help create jobs or families fill up their gas tanks — it will only make things worse.  We need a positive vision and proven, pro-job growth solutions to empower small businesses to invest, expand and hire, unleash our energy resources and make America competitive again. I want to see a hassle-free government serving and helping small business owners and letting consumers decide who has the best product or service rather than hindering and impeding us.”

Rhoda Elliot, owner of several Bill’s Barbecue restaurants in the greater-Richmond area said, “I thank George Allen and Senator Ron Johnson for coming to Bill’s Barbecue and listening to the concerns and challenges of small business leaders in our area.”

Roll Call: Ron Johnson Endorsing, Stumping for George Allen Today

By Kyle Trygstad

Roll Call

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson today will endorse and later appear alongside former Sen. George Allen, who is running to win back his former seat in Virginia.

The Republicans will hold a small-business roundtable this afternoon at Bill’s Barbecue, a Richmond institution that recently closed five of its eight area locations, according to local reports. Johnson, who was recently tasked with coordinating Senate Republicans’ messaging, ran his own business for three decades before being elected to the Senate in 2010.

“I have experienced first-hand the burdens Washington places on small business and the American people,” Johnson writes in an email on behalf of Allen that will be sent today. “We must change the spending and debt culture in Washington. It is why I ran. It is the fight I fight every day. It will take people who exhibit a special kind of strength to change Washington. It is why I’m proud to support George Allen for US Senate, and I wanted you to be one of the first to know.”

Susan Allen Visits Isle of Wight County, Virginia Beach, & Chesapeake

A successful day on the campaign trail for me is to meet a range of Virginians and to be able to talk to them about George’s vision for the future.  Yesterday falls into the successful category as I was able to visit Surry County, historic downtown Smithfield in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake.

I enjoyed stopping at Edward’s Ham Shoppes in Surry.  The Edward’s family has received multiple awards for the their hams and their son, who graduated from James Madison University in 2011, has joined the family business doing social media.  Sam and Donna Edward’s are most worried about the deficit in this country and many of those frequenting the shop feel the same way.  Even Sam Edwards Jr. felt like he and his piers would be paying more attention to the issues that will certainly effect their future.

The College Run Farms, a strawberry farm in Surry, was a welcome stop on our way to Smithfield.  We bought some strawberries and interacted with the customers, several of whom remembered George from his days as Governor and look forward to voting for him in June and November.

In Smithfield, at the Smithfield Gourmet Bakery and Cafe, we met with women, small business owners and those working in tourism and economic development.  Downtown Smithfield is putting its best face forward and working hard to attract daytime tourists from Williamsburg and other parts of the Commonwealth. The most interesting tid bit of the day, was to learn they are leading historic tours by Kayak so visitors can see the beautiful historic homes in Smithfield by water.  But like most localities, they are facing very difficult budgets effecting schools and fire and rescue departments.  I did enjoy popping into some of the new and established stores to chat with the owners and employees.  Stores such as The Christmas Shop that has been open 18 years as well as Anne of Smithfield that has been open 8 months and Signature Styles, a new beauty salon.

I capped the day with a quick hello to Regent University Conservative Union students – a great group of young men, wanting to be engaged in the 2012 election – and the Chesapeake Republican Women’s club – an active club within VFRW I enjoying seeing often.

I look forward to more days like yesterday and meeting many more young republicans and small business owners – this election really is for them.  It was a long day but totally worth it.

The Patch: U.S. Senate Candidate George Allen Visits Manassas Park Police

The Patch: U.S. Senate Candidate George Allen Visits Manassas Park Police
By Jamie Rogers, April 16, 2012

Former U.S. Senator and Virginia Gov. George Allen and his wife, Susan, paid a visit to the Manassas Park Police Department Saturday and spoke with supporters and several local officers.

Allen called the officers he met,”tireless, dedicated and hardworking” in a Saturday blog post.

One of the Manassas Park Police officers commented on his “Truth in Sentencing” legislation, saying it was one of the most beneficial he’d encountered in all his career, Allen said.

Allen supporter, local historian and Manassas Park resident Dick Fischer said he was most honored when Allen wiped down a part of his car before placing a campaign bumper sticker on it.

“How humble, me standing there while the governor is shining my car,” Fischer said. “I also met the governor’s wife; she is a charming lady.”

Manassas Park Councilman Brian Leeper and former Councilman Ben Wren were among the Allen supporters present on Saturday.

“I’m glad he came, I think it made the police officers’ day to have him come,” Leeper said.
