Susan Allen Campaigns in Charlottesville

Check out the coverage of our visit to downtown Charlottesville today. I was also able to to drive by George’s old law office building and see Historic Charlottesville where I used to give tours when George was in the General Assembly.  Twenty-five years later, he is the same man with a genuine desire to help all Virginians and the Country.

Fraternal Order of Police – Thompson Hall Lodge

It was invigorating to be back at the Thompson Hall Lodge with so many good friends and outstanding law-enforcement officers.  Charlottesville and the Commonwealth of Virginia are fortunate to have so many hard-working, dedicated and tireless law-enforcement officers.

We’ve been working together for a long time — since my days in the House of Delegates – to keep our community and our families safe.  Safe neighborhoods and safe communities matter a great deal in attracting jobs and investment.

Great Day in Augusta, Greene and Albermarle Counties

Tomorrow I look forward to joining with active, freedom-loving leaders and small business owners in Henrico and Hanover Counties to complete a full, great week conversing with small business owners and families from Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Waynesboro and Staunton, as well as Augusta, Rockingham, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Prince William, Shenandoah, Greene and Albemarle Counties.  They all share similar concerns about the taxes, overreaching regulations and mandates that are coming out of Washington.

The day started with breakfast at the Shoney’s near Staunton where a concerned woman expressed serious objections about the impact of Obamacare on the health care profession from her perspective as the wife of a doctor of internal medicine.  She maintained that Obamacare is creating a “tidal wave of patients” and a “deficit of doctors.”  These are precisely the kind of negative consequences that arise through over-reach of the federal government and it’s another example of why we need to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Later in the afternoon I joined Greene County Sheriff Steve Smith to tour the “heart of Greene County” – the small businesses of Stanardsville.   During my visit I spoke with the owner of Stanardsville Auto Repair, who told us how high energy costs were adversely impacting every sector of the economy, including his business.  Fewer people were coming in for their regular maintenance and repairs because the high prices of gasoline were forcing them to cut back.

Later that day I was honored to have Sheriff Smith’s endorsement at the Blue Ridge Café with folks from Greene, Albemarle and Spotsylvania Counties.  When I was Governor we accomplished significant reforms in public safety that are still paying dividends today and I am proud to stand with all the members of Virginia’s law enforcement.

Blue Ridge Caucus: Robert Hurt and Two State Lawmakers go to Bat for George Allen on National Health Care Law

Blue Ridge Cacus:
Robert Hurt and Two State Lawmakers go to Bat for George Allen on National Health Care Law

U.S. Congressman Robert Hurt, R-Chatham, Virginia Sen. Steve Martin, R-Chesterfield County, and Del. John Cox, R-Ashland, held a conference call this morning to tout U.S. Senate candidate George Allen and push for repeal of the 2009 health care reform law, saying it would place unreasonable mandates on businesses and hurt job growth.

Hurt said he’s heard lots about the law during his travels around the 5th Congressional District.

“One of the huge sources of concern is the president’s health care law that was adopted by the previous Congress,” Hurt said. “Concern from people who want quality health care at an affordable price, concern from providers. But important as anything it’s frustrating for business folks who feel like they’re being punished and have to suffer not only the real consequences but also the uncertainty of where we go from here.”

Hurt said the House passed a measure to repeal the health care law, but it was not approved by the U.S. Senate. He said Allen “is the kind of person we need in Washington” to change that.

I asked about Tim Kaine’s defense of the law in Roanoke earlier this week, particular four provisions that have already gone into effect: The allowance for children to stay on their parents’ plan until age 26; a prohibition on insurance companies turning down patients for pre-existing conditions; tax credits for small businesses to buy insurance; and the expansion of credits to help seniors pay for prescriptions and to receive free preventative care.

Hurt said it’s important when talking about repeal of the health care law to also talk about what will replace it.

“I think there’s probably support in a replacement for health care reform, which is desperately needed,” Hurt said. But, he added, “The underlying principles for the replacement have got to be free-market principles.”

Hurt predicted the law as passed would drive doctors out of the business, creating diminished supply as demand increases. That will result in increased health care costs, he said.

“We have to talk about a replacement bill when we talk about repeal,” Hurt said. “The American people know that health care needs to be fixed. I think Gov. Allen knows and supports that.”

Allen Gets Haircut, Goes After Obama and Kaine on Jobs

By Aaron Richardson

Former Virginia governor and current U.S. Senate candidate George Allen touted job creation and lowering taxes at a campaign stop at Staples
Barber Shop in Charlottesville Thursday.

“I’m at Staples to get my monthly shearing,” Allen said. “I’ve been coming here for years; I’ve heard a lot of wisdom at Staples.”

Allen said he had spent the day touring small businesses from Roanoke to Charlottesville to talk to business owners about job creation.

“People care about jobs,” Allen said. “There’s a lot of people who do have a job, but it’s not necessarily consistent to their talents or their skills.”

Allen criticized President Barack Obama and his own senatorial opponent, Democratic former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, for their proposals on job creation.

“It looks to me like what [the president] and my opponent Tim Kaine are proposing is just more of the same,” Allen said. “More spending, higher taxes and more debt … If more government spending and higher taxes and more debt were the solution, we wouldn’t have this 9
percent unemployment rate.”
