Celebrating Mothers on Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day, I’m so grateful that my mother is still providing me guidance and encouragement every day. Mothers pass on enduring love, care and lessons that shape our values throughout our lives. My own mother’s appreciation of freedom and responsibility are engrained in my life.  And now I’m blessed to have Susan as the wonderful mother of our three children: Tyler, Forrest and Brooke.  Today and every day is a great day to say to our mother, “Thank you for my life. I love you so much.”

George Allen Sets Clear Contrast Against Tim Kaine on Jobs

Virginia Beach, VA – Today, George Allen participated in a Republican primary debate in Virginia Beach, organized by the Republican Party of Virginia. The second of three scheduled debates, this debate focused on economic and regulatory policies affecting small businesses.

Allen used the debate to draw a clear contrast between his record of supporting pro- job growth policies that helped create 300,000 net new Virginia jobs against Tim Kaine’s record of losing 100,000 Virginia jobs.  Following the debate, former Congresswoman Thelma Drake (R-VA) and Delegate John Cosgrove (R-Chesapeake) issued the following statements:

“This Senate race is about whether our children and grandchildren will have the same opportunities to reach the American Dream that we had,” said former Congresswoman Thelma Drake.  “But for too many small business owners, their American Dream is slipping away under the Kaine/Obama tax and regulate agenda.  Serving as a Delegate while George Allen was Governor, I saw firsthand how he worked with legislators from both parties to empower Virginia small businesses by eliminating and reforming 70 percent of Virginia regulations and cutting taxes $600 million. George Allen is the clear choice for a future of more jobs and less government.”

“As he said in the debate, George Allen can’t wait to compare his record with Tim Kaine’s record,” said Delegate John Crosgrove. “We have a choice between George Allen’s proven, pro-growth record that created 300,000 net new jobs in Virginia or Tim Kaine’s record of proposing billion-dollar tax increases while losing 100,000 Virginia jobs.  Small businesses need George Allen’s record of leadership in working with people of both parties to advance our freedom and opportunity agenda.”

Henrico, VA – Today, the National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed George Allen for U.S. Senate, citing his stellar record of defending the Second Amendment and protecting our Constitutional right to bear arms.  The NRA is America’s leading organization promoting gun safety education and the Second Amendment with more than 4 million current members nationwide.

“It’s a most significant honor to receive the important endorsement of the National Rifle Association (NRA), a great American organization with so many patriotic, active members throughout Virginia.  The NRA supports law enforcement professionals, gun safety education and stands strong for our foundational Second Amendment rights.  I have always been proud to support the natural rights of law-abiding citizens to protect their families and themselves.  In the U.S. Senate I will remain committed to defending our rights enshrined in our Constitution,” said George Allen.  “My friends in the sportsmen community who enjoy the natural beauty of Virginia’s fields, forests, streams and lakes can count on me to be a strong and steadfast advocate for their freedom to hunt and fish.  And all Virginians have my commitment to stand up for their God-given rights.  The way to reduce crime is to crack down on criminals, not disarm our law-abiding citizens.”

Blue Ridge Caucus: Allen to get NRA Endorsement in Primary

By Michael Sluss, May 10, 2012

Republican George Allen will get the endorsement of the National Rifle Association in the GOP primary for Virginia’s open U.S. Senate seat, strengthening his position in the four-way nomination contest.

The NRA will formally announce the endorsement on Thursday, on the eve of the second pre-primary debate among the four Republican Senate candidates. The winner of the June 12 primary will face former Gov. Tim Kaine, the Democratic nominee, in the general election.

Allen, a former governor and U.S. senator, has had the NRA’s backing in prior runs for statewide office. This endorsement from the nation’s most recognized gun-rights organization could help Allen solidify support from conservative gun-owners and sportsmen in advance of next month’s primary.

Allen’s opponents for the GOP nomination are state Del. Bob Marshall of Prince William County, Chesapeake minister E.W. Jackson, and state Tea Party leader Jamie Radtke of Chesterfield County.

Allen today picked up the endorsement of the American Conservative Union.

The NRA cites Allen’s pro-gun record as a senator and governor in its endorsement announcement. Among other things, the NRA notes that Allen co-sponsored and supported legislation that prevents firearms manufacturers and dealers from being sued for crimes committed with their products, and sponsored a bill that would have required states to recognize each other’s concealed carry permits.

Weekend on the Trail: Seeing Every VA Region Shine

After another great weekend on the campaign trail, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to live in the Commonwealth, where every region shines and is full of wonderful people.  Saturday morning found us in Newport News with the lively Hampton Roads Republican Women’s Club.  This club, like the many other Republican women’s clubs that make up the Virginia Federation, is an amazing group of women who are engaged in their communities – not just participating in elections and helping candidates but also in helping other organizations care for their neighbors.  The thoughtful exchange we had there was similar to those I hear at other clubs.  We discussed the need to educate and engage young people in politics and to teach them about economics on a national scale.  George’s race and the upcoming election are truly about their future. We have worked to bring high school students, college students and young professionals into our campaign.  We will continue to try to reach them and have them join others in our Ambassadors for Allen coalition as we talk about the issues affecting their future.

After Newport News, I headed to Richmond for the 2nd annual Que Pasa? Festival on Cinco de Mayo. The event’s mission was to highlight the Latin culture and passion in Richmond, and that it did.  The vibrancy of the many activities, food stands, performers and music kept the entire area engaged and moving.  I was able to talk with local Republicans and George Allen supporters, which is always a highlight.  But, I also walked through the booths and vendors lining the Canal Walk and talked with many local entrepreneurs, business owners, young professionals, and volunteers for non-profits.  The hard work, tenacity and spirit of the people I met are representative of what makes this country and Virginia a great place to live and work.

An early morning was well worth it when I arrived at the Loudoun Lyme Disease 5K/1M event in Lansdowne on Sunday.  Only in its second year, this group grew its participation by three times compared to its inaugural year.  Over 900 people came out to take part in the race and many more walked through the information fair focused on awareness, prevention, and treatment.  Prior to the start of the 5K, I was able to recall to the runners our family policy of checking for ticks each evening , as much as brushing our teeth.  Finding the ticks is just the beginning.  We need a better way of detecting and treating this disease.  It was an honor to spend the morning with so many  Loudoun residents who have suffered from Lyme disease and to hear their stories inspires me to want to do more to help them.

To cap it off, I was able to make it to Brooke’s Lacrosse game in Vienna to see her score and help her team continue their undefeated streak.  The perfect end to a productive and beneficial weekend on the trail.

The Patch: George Allen Visits AOL Dulles Campus

By Jamie Rogers, May 4, 2012

George Allen, the favored Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, dropped by the AOL Dulles campus Friday and talked to employees and readers of the Internet giant about his ideas for the future of technology and innovation in America.

“We talk about America being the world capital of innovation. You all here with AOL are leaders in innovation,” Allen told a crowd of about 50. “America is open for business,” he said.

“The American people are the hardest-working, most creative folks in the world,” Allen said. “It’s not their fault that we have this high unemployment or high under-employment in this country. It’s our government that is imposing, in many respects, burdens that have put us at a competitive disadvantages.”

Allen said intellectual property should be protected but the Internet should be free of government regulations. He said companies who sell on the Internet shouldn’t be taxed unless they have an actual physical location.

“The Internet is such a great tool for sharing innovation and ideas,” he said. “I look at the Internet as the best invention for sharing ideas and information since the Guttenberg Press. If Martin Luther had nailed his 95 theses … and they were torn down, who the heck would have read them? That’s the way the Internet is right now. It gets information into places that are oppressed.”

Invigorating Day on the Trail in Lexington and Caroline County

It was an invigorating day on the trail in Lexington and Caroline County meeting with and talking to Virginians of all ages and backgrounds advancing our positive vision for a better future.

This morning at the fired up 6th Congressional District GOP Convention in Lexington, entering the auditorium I talked with Amanda Haas who was volunteering to help our campaign, putting my lapel stickers on supporters.  She started at Liberty University as a major in theater and drama, but decided to switch to political science after seeing the results of President Obama’s failed policies. It is our responsibility to make sure that future college graduates like Amanda have the same opportunities to achieve their dreams that we had growing up.  And it’s heartening to see the enthusiasm of young people like Amanda who recognize that this is a pivotal time in our history and are getting off the sidelines and on our A-Team!

After a 3 hour drive to the Sili’s Red Barn View near Bowling Green, I joined Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, Congressman Rob Wittman, Delegate Rob Bell, Delegate Mark Dudenhefer, hosts Supervisor Jeff Sili and his wife Susan and many other friends in Caroline County for a “Let Freedom Ring” rally!  D&J Meat was cooking BBQ and the owner, Dootsie, said that he was glad to hear my speech and that I’d be someone to go to Washington and stand up for small businesses.  He feels that the taxes he’s paying now – and the threats of future higher taxes and regulations are grinding his small business, making it more difficult to pay other bills and operate.  I hear similar concerns from small business owners throughout Virginia – the federal government is taxing and regulating entrepreneurs in so many frustrating ways.  Our local, state, and federal governments ought to be encouraging small businesses with a simpler, fairer and competitive tax system, reasonable regulations and productive energy policies to help them create needed jobs to reinvigorate our economy.
