George Allen Introduces Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms at the “State of the City” and Holds Veterans Forum in Suffolk

It was an honor to introduce Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms for his the “State of the City” address today. Through the years I’ve enjoyed working with Will Sessoms for the people of Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads region.  When I was Governor, Will was an up-and-coming member of the Virginia Beach City Council.  When we were letting the world know that Virginia Is Open for Business! and adding over 300,000 net new private-sector jobs, it helped to have local leaders like Will, who comes from the private-sector and understands what businesses need.  Economic development is a team effort.

It was important in convincing companies like GEICO and Stihl to locate their offices and expand operations in Virginia Beach. With Will’s leadership, Geico and Stihl are still going strong, with Stihl announcing plans to expand and create more new jobs in Virginia Beach.  We also worked together against BRAC efforts to move the East  Coast Master jet base from Oceana, and hope to work with the Mayor and the people of the Hampton Roads region to logically keep Oceana and the many essential military assets in Virginia ensuring a strong, efficient national defense.

Mayor Sessoms is sending the message loud and clear that Virginia Beach is Open for Business and Tourism!  Under his leadership, Virginia Beach is adding jobs and tourism is increasing, even in a tough economy.  Today Virginia Beach has some of the top-ranked schools in our State and our nation, a AAA Bond Rating and The Wall Street Journal just named it the “best-run city” in America!

In Suffolk I spoke with Veterans from the South Hampton Roads area at a forum at VFW Post 9382 about their concerns.  Many Veterans I heard from brought up impending fee and premium increases in TRICARE being proposed by President Obama, which would have a harmful impact on Veterans and military families forced to pay higher costs for health care.  I believe it’s wrong for Washington to place its budgetary burden on the backs of active duty military families and Veterans because of their inability to set priorities, and I will fight to make sure that America keeps her promises to our nation’s Veterans and their families for the benefits they have earned.

Energy security and the high prices of fuel was another major concern.  These veterans recognize that energy is a matter of national security and America need not remain vulnerable to hostile regimes for oil.  It’s time that we take control of our destiny and unleash our American energy resources to reduce the cost of fuel and food, create thousands of new, good-paying jobs, increase our supply of affordable energy, make us less vulnerable to hostile regimes, keep our money here in the U.S.A. and Virginia could use the royalties for roads and transportation from off shore production.

George Allen Meets with Concerned Families in the Shenandoah Valley and in Prince William County

I had a productive and energizing Saturday morning talking and meeting with serious, concerned families in the Shenandoah Valley (Constitutional Conservatives) and in Prince William County who share my concerns about high unemployment, the rising cost of fuel and food, and the dangerous levels of debt caused by harmful policies emanating from Washington. It’s heartening listening to and discussing ideas with so many Virginians responding positively to our constructive plan of action to revitalize America’s entrepreneurial spirit, unleash our energy resources and rein in the over-reaching, over-spending federal government. The people I heard from today are passionate for productive American energy, the future of their children and grandchildren, keeping our promises to veterans and recognize that we need to get in control of our own destiny. We all envision a better future and are willing to work hard to restore the promise of the American Dream!

Senate Rejects Amendment to Approve the Keystone Pipeline

It’s disappointing that President Obama and my opponent Tim Kaine continue to stand in the way of thousands of good-paying jobs and a steady supply of affordable energy from a close neighbor and ally. To say ‘No’ to the Keystone Pipeline as gasoline prices reach near-record highs shows just how out-of-touch Washington has become with Virginia families and small businesses struggling to make ends meet, especially working men and women in suburban and rural communities who drive long distances to and from work each day. Lower and middle income working families who are paying about $30 more with every fill-up compared to 3 years ago are hit hardest by these counterproductive, punishing policies. It’s time that America has an energy plan that aims to reduce costs in the long-term and make America more energy secure – the only thing lacking is the political will in Washington.

George Allen Meets With Republican Primary Voters On Super Tuesday

After speaking this morning to the AIPAC Conference, I headed to Loudoun County to meet with Republican primary voters and election workers at polling places on a beautiful Super Tuesday in Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William Counties!  Thank you to all our volunteers who worked hard at precincts throughout the Commonwealth to collect petition signatures and sign up new volunteers for our A-Team.  I started at Horizon Elementary in Sterling,  went to Oak Hill Elementary near Herndon, Jennie Dean Elementary in Manassas and made the last visit of the afternoon to my home polling precinct at Washington Mill Elementary near Mount Vernon in Fairfax County.   Earlier today my wife Susan also campaigned at polling places from the Lorton, Newington, and Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County to Arlington County.  Later this evening I’ll be joining Neil Cavuto on Fox Business for their special “Super Tuesday” election coverage at 8:30 PM ET.  The coverage begins at 8:00 PM, please be sure to tune in!

WAVY: Gas prices affect delivery businesses

Nearly everywhere I go in Virginia I hear from someone – whether it is a small business owner, working people in the suburbs and rural areas, or a parent who drives the carpool – who is worried about the increased cost of gasoline and how it is affecting their monthly budget. The rising costs of gasoline and fuel touch virtually every aspect of our economy.

Consumers hit more than once

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Higher gas prices are beginning to affect local businesses that deliver their goods or services, so they’re passing on the costs.

Robert Parker owns Seeley Florist in Norfolk. Parker told WAVY.com, “We’re paying the most we can for gas right now. If the prices continue to go up, we’re going to have to find a better method of doing business. We may have to make less deliveries or deliver only in areas close by.”

LaPizzeria owner Kenny Ferrigno said each pie that’s delivered carries a fee, which goes to the driver.

“We have a small charge on delivery, which is a dollar, which we initiated a while back when prices started going up. And that goes entirely to the driver to offset the money they’re putting into their tank,” Ferrigno said.

“We’re going to have to raise the prices obviously and the customer is going to have to share the burden,” Betty Callahan, who runs Bay Breeze Limousine Service, said.

She has four drivers who ferry around passengers in two super stretch Ford Excursions and two stretch Lincolns.

Business owners say they’re also getting hit with higher prices from vendors and suppliers, making it harder for them to absorb rising costs across the board.

Chesterfield County GOP 2012 Central Virginia Lincoln-Reagan Dinner

Susan and I had a wonderful time at the Chesterfield County GOP 2012 Central Virginia Lincoln-Reagan Dinner – it was great to be back in our old home county. Virginians have always played a major role in shaping the course of history and I believe the elections in 2012 will be pivotal in shaping history again. Chesterfield Republicans are energized and ready to win!
