George Allen commemorates Martin Luther King Day with Alexandria Councilwoman Alicia Hughes, President & CEO of the Northern Virginia Urban League Terri Braxton and the Chairman of the Northern Virginia Urban League Kenneth Bynum
I spent an inspiring day with unified people of all ages reflecting on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage, the Alexandria Black History Museum and the Northern Virginia Urban League. These organizations are keeping his Dream alive by helping to fulfill his vision for equality of opportunity and justice for all. It was invigorating to see Dr. King’s legacy live on in the hearts and minds of our next generation of young leaders, especially a young man in ninth grade named Justin Cox, who delivered from memory a compelling and inspiring rendition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. His words ring just as true today as they did when they were courageously spoken from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. I believe that public servants ought to strive to create an environment where everyone, regardless of background, has the unfettered opportunity to go as far as their hard work, diligence and ingenuity will take them. The people I had the pleasure of meeting with and talking to today are acting on Dr. King’s vision for a more perfect Union, empowering their communities and changing lives.
