Bill Takes Aim At Union Contracts

Mandatory Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) and outdated Davis-Bacon wage regulations inhibit competitive bidding in favor of union contractors, leading to unnecessarily increased costs for taxpayers.  Moreover, 96% of Virginia construction workers have chosen not to belong to a union, yet under an Obama Executive Order, Washington is using mandatory PLAs to impose union work rules on federal constr…uction contracts, resulting in many public projects in Virginia being awarded to contractors from other States. Like and Share this article if you agree that we should put an end to the mandatory Project Labor Agreements that waste taxpayers’ money and harm the ability of Virginia non-union workers to get employment on public projects.

RTD: “Year Ends with all-time record average gas prices”

With gasoline and diesel prices edging up at the end of this year, lower and middle income working families are hurt the most by record high fuel prices. Let’s commit to unleash our Virginia and American energy resources for more affordable fuel for working families and businesses, more American jobs, national security and keeping our money in the USA. Tim Kaine has thwarted production of oil and gas off our Virginia coast, supports cap and trade energy tax schemes and continues to remain mute on the Keystone pipeline, which is in-line with President Obama’s punishing, restrictive energy policies.

The Allen Record: Regulatory Reform

On this day in 1997, Governor George Allen announced  that over 70% of all regulations have been or will be terminated or amended into a more logical, less intrusive form.  The results were the culmination of a substantial and broad based effort during Governor Allen’s administration to reduce burdensome and unnecessary regulations that were stifling innovation and smothering small business.

Statement from George Allen on the Keystone XL Pipeline

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 17, 2011

Statement from George Allen on the Keystone XL Pipeline

Henrico, VA –George Allen released the following statement on today’s U.S. Senate vote to advance the Keystone XL Pipeline:

“It is time for America to take control of our own destiny. The Keystone Pipeline would create tens of thousands of new jobs for Americans and increase our supply of affordable energy from our close neighbor and ally, not an unfriendly foreign regime. To put partisan politics ahead of American jobs and energy by punting this decision until after the 2012 elections or stopping this project would be an inexcusable failure of leadership at a time when American families and businesses are already struggling under this Administration’s many punishing regulatory policies.  Tim Kaine’s silence as President Obama plays politics with this job-creating initiative shows once again that he would rather follow President Obama’s lead. On every major job-crushing policy from Obamacare to energy tax schemes coming out of Washington in the last three years, Tim Kaine has advocated for them rather than the best interests of Virginia families, seniors and small business owners.”

We both picked Philadelphia over the Jets, New England over Denver and Pittsburgh over the 49ers – the first 2 of which I hope we are both wrong.

Blue Ridge Caucus: Robert Hurt and Two State Lawmakers go to Bat for George Allen on National Health Care Law

Blue Ridge Cacus:
Robert Hurt and Two State Lawmakers go to Bat for George Allen on National Health Care Law
By Mason Adams, December 16, 2011
http://blogs.roanoke.com/politics/2011/12/15/robert-hurt-and-two-state-lawmakers-go-to-bat-for-george-allen-on-national-health-care-law/

U.S. Congressman Robert Hurt, R-Chatham, Virginia Sen. Steve Martin, R-Chesterfield County, and Del. John Cox, R-Ashland, held a conference call this morning to tout U.S. Senate candidate George Allen and push for repeal of the 2009 health care reform law, saying it would place unreasonable mandates on businesses and hurt job growth.

Hurt said he’s heard lots about the law during his travels around the 5th Congressional District.

“One of the huge sources of concern is the president’s health care law that was adopted by the previous Congress,” Hurt said. “Concern from people who want quality health care at an affordable price, concern from providers. But important as anything it’s frustrating for business folks who feel like they’re being punished and have to suffer not only the real consequences but also the uncertainty of where we go from here.”

Hurt said the House passed a measure to repeal the health care law, but it was not approved by the U.S. Senate. He said Allen “is the kind of person we need in Washington” to change that.

I asked about Tim Kaine’s defense of the law in Roanoke earlier this week, particular four provisions that have already gone into effect: The allowance for children to stay on their parents’ plan until age 26; a prohibition on insurance companies turning down patients for pre-existing conditions; tax credits for small businesses to buy insurance; and the expansion of credits to help seniors pay for prescriptions and to receive free preventative care.

Hurt said it’s important when talking about repeal of the health care law to also talk about what will replace it.

“I think there’s probably support in a replacement for health care reform, which is desperately needed,” Hurt said. But, he added, “The underlying principles for the replacement have got to be free-market principles.”

Hurt predicted the law as passed would drive doctors out of the business, creating diminished supply as demand increases. That will result in increased health care costs, he said.

“We have to talk about a replacement bill when we talk about repeal,” Hurt said. “The American people know that health care needs to be fixed. I think Gov. Allen knows and supports that.”
