Who STILL Wants Tax Hikes? President Obama & His Chairman, Tim Kaine
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Who STILL Wants Tax Hikes? President Obama & His Chairman, Tim Kaine
Henrico, VA – After President Obama’s speech last night it is clear there are only a handful of Washington Democrats still calling for massive job-killing tax hikes on Americans. Two of them are former Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine and President Barack Obama.
This weekend, in his Daily Press op-ed, Chairman Kaine echoed President Obama’s belief that the only way to solve our spending problems is with a “balanced approach” that increases taxes on the very people we’re counting on to create jobs and get the economy growing again. (Daily Press, 7/24/11)
But even the New York Times reported that recent studies show tax hikes do four times more damage to economic growth than do spending cuts. (New York Times, 7/17/11)
In contrast, George Allen, in a Daily Press op-ed published the same day as Chairman Kaine’s, called for short-term and long-term solutions that will force Washington to live within its means with reforms like meaningful spending cuts, enforceable caps and a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.
“As top advocate for the Washington’s explosive spending policies that made annual trillion dollar deficits the norm, it’s not surprising that Chairman Kaine is the one of last Democrats still standing with President Obama on massive tax hikes,” said Bill Riggs, Allen campaign spokesman. “Job-killing tax increases and more government spending won’t solve our debt crisis, it will only jeopardize jobs and hurt an already anemic economy. It’s clear that Chairman Kaine would be a Senator for President Obama and his Washington allies, while George Allen would be a Senator for Virginia.”

We need fiscal accountability in Washington
In the past 3 years we’ve seen an explosion of federal government spending and expansion with the $800 billion dollar job-less stimulus, the $1.5 trillion government takeover of health care and overregulation that is burdening our private sector. And how do liberal Democrats in Washington want to solve our spending problems? With job-killing tax hikes that will hurt an already anemic economy and further hurt our recovery. We need fiscal accountability in Washington and can look to President Reagan for guidance. In his farewell address to the American people, after 8 years of a successful presidency which reinvigorated America, Ronald Reagan said there were two things he wished he had had as president (and that he hoped future presidents—both Republican and Democrat—would obtain): the line-item veto and a constitutional amendment to balance the federal budget. President Reagan understood that the only way to make Washington to live within its means is with a Balanced Budget Amendment. We owe it to our children to make the tough decisions now so that their opportunities in life aren’t diminished in the future.
Richmond Times Dispatch: Allen, Kaine: Base schools
Glad to help draw attention to how SMART Credits can be used to rebuild old, dilapidated school buildings, especially those on Virginia’s military bases. Every student should have the opportunity to learn in an environment that helps them reach their fullest potential. Using these SMART Credits to renovate and update these school buildings would create jobs, save taxpayers money, and make them more energy efficient – that’s why it is a key part of my Blueprint for America’s Comeback.
Allen, Kaine: Base schools

Last week senatorial candidates George Allen and Tim Kaine issued a joint statement. Rather than exchanging partisan blasts the Republican and the Democrat called for the rehabilitation of schools on U.S. military bases. Their release followed a report that detailed the dilapidated conditions of many schools serving military families.
Democratic Sen. Mark Warner opened the week with a call for action. Allen and Kaine echoed his themes. All five of the schools on military bases in Virginia fell below standards. Something must be done.
The School Modernization and Revitalization Tax Credit (SMART) rates as a welcome something. Paul Goldman, the ubiquitous political gadfly, long has promoted the excellent idea, which would offer tax credits for the restoration of old school buildings. Base schools would seem to be ideal candidates for the credits.
USA Today: Gas prices turn up, could put damper on economy
While people are continuing to struggle with high gas prices, it makes no sense to continue these counterproductive energy policies that keep American energy off-limits. We need to take control of our own destiny by unleashing our vast energy resources right here in the USA. Developing those resources would create thousands of new jobs, reduce our reliance on foreign sources & keep our money here in America.
The George Allen Record – Welfare Reform – July 25, 2005
In commemoration of Virginia’s sweeping welfare reform initiative, on July 25, 2005, George Allen marked the ten year anniversary of welfare reform in Virginia by visiting Cross Over Health Clinic and Calhoun Community Center, two Richmond area locations he first inspected as part of the initiative back in 1995. The initial implementation of Allen’s welfare reform initiative began on July 1, 1995 with the Virginia Independence Program (VIP) and Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW).
During the ceremony marking the tenth anniversary, Allen stated, “Ten years ago, we embarked on this honest new era of hope and opportunity. Back in 1995, we followed through on our promises and this welfare reform law was the most principled pro-family, pro-work, pro-individual responsibility, law in the nation. At the time, Virginia had a system that rewarded idle behavior and we wanted to promote the work ethic. We required able-bodied, able-minded welfare recipients to work. Today we don’t measure welfare reform success by how many people are on welfare, we measure it by how many people are leading independent, self-reliant lives.”
In the sixteen years since the welfare reform was instituted, welfare rolls in Virginia have been reduced by 47% and have saved Virginia taxpayers over $57 million in its first two years. Through upholding the twin pillars of strong work ethic and individual responsibility, George Allen believes that welfare should not be a way of life, but a temporary means of assistance that serves as a hand up to opportunity rather than a hand out to dependency.

Last year, Susan and I watched with pride as our oldest daughter graduated from college, and set off on her life journey in search of a job to start her career.
She was one of the lucky ones, eventually finding a job in her chosen field, but unfortunately many of her friends and peers are still searching. More and more young people are viewing America not as the land of opportunity as our generation did, but as a place of diminished expectations. The America we grew up in was an America where people were only limited by their imagination, ingenuity and diligence.
Pessimism is creeping into every corner of our country because the path America is on today is dangerous, debilitating and unsustainable. It will diminish our children’s future and everyone’s opportunity to achieve their American Dream.
Washington has an opportunity to start taking the necessary steps to set things right and get us back on the path to prosperity. To get our government under control to improve job opportunities, we have to stop digging ourselves deeper and deeper into debt. In the blink of an eye, our leaders in Washington have made trillion dollar deficits the norm. This year’s deficit is projected to a hit an astounding $1.65 trillion dollars.
That adds up. Over $14 trillion dollars in national indebtedness and counting. The fight in Washington these days is over increasing the debt by over $2 trillion more.
The impending debt-ceiling deadline offers us an opportunity to finally pull Washington back from the brink. Passing a balanced budget amendment will eliminate the all-too-common debt ceiling theatrics we witness every couple of years.
Some say an amendment to our Constitution is an extraordinary step.
Correct, and this is an extraordinary crisis that has already done great harm to the American Dream forcing us to borrow approximately 40 cents on every dollar our government spends. A balanced budget amendment will force leaders in Washington to live by the same rules most Virginia families do – within their means.
Beyond a constitutional amendment, Washington must make meaningful and significant reductions in spending and enact enforceable spending caps to prevent another increase of the debt ceiling in 2 years. Taken together, these three steps will finally start moving us away from the cliff and into the right direction.
Make no mistake, I do not want to see our country default on its obligations, which could create hardships for everyone here both in the short term and the long term. But, we also can’t continue with the typical Washington band-aid approach, where they take us to the edge of disaster, offer up a short- term solution that fails to address the underlying problem; and then our country is forced to deal with the problem again down the road, spending and wasting trillions of dollars along the way.
Now is the time for us to come together and make the tough choices to stop spending money we don’t have and can’t afford. Our children deserve better fiscal accountability and pro-job growth solutions. Because, ultimately it will be future generations that shoulder the lasting burdens of Washington’s failures today.
Unfortunately others don’t see it that way. Even with unemployment continuing to climb to 9.2%, some – like my opponent, Tim Kaine – are calling for one trillion dollars in tax increases. Tax increases will only cripple our already bleak economy by crushing any potential job growth on the horizon.
This is not the first time Tim Kaine has pushed for tax increases. As governor he called for $4 billion worth of tax increases and under his leadership Virginia lost nearly 100,000 jobs. He also shut down numerous Rest Areas along interstate roads throughout Virginia, claiming he needed to raise taxes to keep them open. Upon taking office Governor McDonnell launched an audit that showed V-DOT actually had a surplus of nearly $900 million.
I call on Mr. Kaine and others to offer up constructive, long term solutions like I’ve proposed and am supporting as opposed to raising taxes and not addressing the out of control spending that leads to this reoccurring debt ceiling increases. He may not like the ideas I’m advocating for – as is his right – but it’s my hope that he will offer up concrete solutions as I have. We may disagree with each other’s approach but it’s a debate worth having for the future direction of our country.
I want America to be in control of our own destiny. We remain vulnerable to outside forces due to our dangerous levels of debt and our counterproductive energy policies.
In this pivotal race for America’s future, I’ve laid out a pro-growth plan of action for jobs, affordable American energy, competitiveness, freedom and opportunity that steers us away from mandates, dictates, redistribution and dependency on government.
There is urgency for action to reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit of America.
Americans are the most productive, innovative and hardworking people in the world. It is not the quality of the American people who are holding back our economic growth and security – it is the burdensome course Washington has set us on that needs to change. I want to get “America Open for Business!” again.

Please take a moment to read my op-ed that ran in the Daily Press today on our country’s extraordinary fiscal crisis and why I believe a Balanced Budget Amendment is so important for our children’s future and our country.
