Egypt and beyond: Four pillars for free and just society

By George Allen
Richmond Times Dispatch
February 27, 2011

After 30 years of rule and the imposition of economic and social restraints on the people of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak yielded power in the face of determined, continuous rallies of people in favor of greater freedom and the opportunity to lead better lives.

The Egyptian army did not turn against the citizens, which is a beneficial sign of restraint — and the fact that so many Egyptians have served in their military.

As the world awaits the civilian government that fills the void, the United States and our allies should support a peaceful transition to a society in Egypt that addresses both the aspirations of the citizens and the basic individual rights that should be secured for all human beings.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, it became clear to me that there is a set of key, foundational principles common to all successful civilizations.

These ideals, which I call the Four Pillars of a Free and Just Society , are imperative for any form of government to earn the consent of the people and allow them to lead fulfilling lives. These pillars should be the basis of any emerging Egypt — in a constitution and laws.

The George Allen Record – Welfare Reform – February 25, 1995

In a victory for the taxpayers of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia General Assembly on February 25th, 1995 approved comprehensive reform to the Commonwealth’s welfare system.

Welfare Reform

Governor Allen applauded the passage of his initiative saying “Today we have sent a message that welfare in Virginia will no longer be a way of life, but a temporary means of assistance that will serve as a hand up to opportunity rather than a hand out to dependency.”

At the time, Virginia’s welfare reform legislation was regarded as the most sweeping reform legislation in the nation and required all able-bodied welfare recipients to work in exchange for benefits they received.  It established paternity cases involving out-of-wedlock births to ensure the fathers were financially responsible; required unwed teen mothers to stay in school; and set a two-year limit on how long one could receive aid.

Virginia’s successful reforms were used as a model around the country.  To this day Virginia’s welfare rolls are 47% lower than they were in 1995 and have saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

Va. Senate begins process to strengthen private-property rights

This is a great step to enhance protection of property rights in the light of the Kelo v. New London decision. We cannot allow Judges, including those on the Supreme Court, to amend our Bill of Rights by judicial decree, and allow governments to act as commissars.  It is wrong for any Government to take a person’s home not for a road, not for a school, not for a legitimate public use, but simply because they think they can generate more tax revenue from the property by transferring it to another private concern to re-develop that taken property.  It is contrary to what I believe is a fair and just society.  The ownership of a home or business is the very definition of the American dream and means individuals own property, not government authorities or their favored interest.

Va. Senate begins process to strengthen private-property rights

The Democratic-led state Senate handed a victory to tea party activists and other conservatives in Virginia on Tuesday by agreeing to start the process of adding new protections for private property to the state constitution.

On a 35 to 5 vote, the Senate agreed that the state’s constitution should include a prohibition against government seizing of property through eminent domain to spur economic development or job creation.

If the constitutional amendment were adopted, the government would be able to seize land only for public uses – such as roads and school buildings – and it would be required to fully compensate land owners. Several years and additional debate will be needed before the language could be added to the constitution.

To change the document, an amendment must pass the General Assembly twice, with an election in between. Then, it must be approved by voters through referendum. Tuesday’s passage was only the first time such a measure has emerged from the General Assembly.

Americans for Prosperity Applauds U.S. Senate Candidate George Allen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

February 19th, 2011

American for Prosperity announced today that George Allen has signed the No Climate Tax Pledge. By signing the pledge, Allen promised to “oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”  Full text of the pledge can be found here .

In response George Allen issued the following statement:

“It is unacceptable to use climate change legislation as a poorly disguised attempt to raise taxes on hardworking Americans.  Disastrous legislation like the cap-and-trade scheme would artificially increase the costs of energy, and therefore harm employers, destroy jobs, increase costs on consumers and tighten already-shrinking family budgets. “Our policies should make job creation easier, encourage entrepreneurism and allow easier pursuit of the American Dream, not hamstring the economy with harmful, wrong-headed approaches that stifle creativity and growth.  I will always oppose any climate taxes.”

“The one thing elected officials should all be able to agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP-VA State Director Ben Marchi. “We encourage all of Virginia’s elected officials and candidates for elected office to sign the pledge.”

Virginia pledge signers include: U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor; U.S. Representatives Scott Rigell, Robert Hurt, and Morgan Griffith; Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling; Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli; as well numerous state senators and delegates lawmakers.

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Marchi. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

The pledge is available online at www.NoClimateTax.com <http://www.noclimatetax.com/> . AFP does not endorse candidates.  All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.

Dependence on foreign oil leaves us vulnerable

The unrest in the Middle East and N. Africa is another reminder that our heavy dependence on foreign oil makes our economy vulnerable to outside forces. America is blessed with more energy resources than any country in the world and it is time to unleash our resources and creativity. We need to take control of our own destiny and stop being subject to the whims and designs of hostile dictators, oligarchs and cartels.

If Libyan unrest spreads, gas could reach $5

By Gary Strauss

USA TODAY

February 22, 2011

If political unrest in Libya spreads to other oil-rich countries and the ensuing chaos disrupts crude oil production, gas prices could hit $5 a gallon by peak summer driving season, industry analysts say.

Oil prices soared to the highest level in more than two years as violence spread in Libya and Moammar Gadhafi’s grip weakened. Only a small amount of Libya’s oil production appeared to have been affected, though analysts fear revolts will spread to OPEC heavyweights like Iran.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate for April delivery jumped $4.59, or 5% to $94.30 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The last time oil traded at that level was Oct. 2, 2008. The April contract traded as high as $98.48 per barrel.

“If this thing escalates and there’s a good chance that there’d be a shift in supplies, $5 gas isn’t out of the question,” says Darin Newsom, senior analyst at energy tracker DTN.

George Allen Speaks To Tea Party Crowd – By Shawn Drury

If this weekend is any judge, Republican George Allen is already in top campaign form. The former state delegate, governor and current candidate to reclaim his old Senate seat, met with approximately 140 enthusiastic supporters at the home of a Lorton resident on Saturday evening.

Fielding questions on foreign policy, the economy, health care and energy, Allen displayed command of the issues that matter to Tea Party conservatives. The event was organized by Tea Party Patriots for George Allen.

Allen’s sharpness comes from plenty of practice. Since the summer, he’s met with dozens of groups throughout Virginia, in settings similar to the one Saturday. Allen returned to private life for the first time in more than two decades when James Webb beat him by less than a percentage point in 2006.

While in the private sector, the issue that moved to the forefront of Allen’s platform was energy.

“It’s a national security issue,” he said. “It’s embarrassing and demeaning that Saudi Arabian princes can cause hard-working families to pay higher fuel bills.”

Since losing his seat to Webb, Allen’s attempt to get back the seat, which he made official last month, has been considered a formality in Virginia GOP circles.

However, the fact that Webb indicated that he will not seek re-election, does not necessarily mean Allen’s path will be any easier.

Speculation about who will run from the Democratic side has been rampant, with conjecture focused on former governor and present Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine.

But before Allen meets a Democrat in the general election, he must survive a potentially bruising primary. So far, only Tea Party Activist Jamie Radtke of Richmond has officially declared her candidacy, but with more than  a year remaining until the GOP primary, the potential exists for several other candidates to join the fray.

Regardless of who those candidates may be, Allen will have a decided advantage in fundraising and name recognition. However, the same could be said about other establishment candidates like himself across the country, who were defeated by Tea Party upstarts in the last election cycle.

While not running from his record, Allen’s remarks on Saturday were squarely aimed at proving his Tea Party bona fides. Judging from the response he received, he was successful. Allen made it clear he is sympathetic to Tea Party values and plans to consult their opinion for the duration of the campaign.

“What’s great about the Tea Party folks is that they’re knowledgeable about issues and they believe, like I do, that the constitution is the greatest invention in the history of mankind,” he said.

Alice Butler-Short, whose home served as the setting for the event, scoffed at the notion Allen was simply playing to the crowd.

“He is everything the Tea Party stands for. All of the principles and all of the values. We are basically constitutional conservatives. We revere the constitution and don’t want to see the country move away from it. And George Allen’s record shows that he believes that, too.”

Still, Allen’s biggest challenge, and that of the Virginia GOP, might be to get the famously independent-minded Tea Party to coalesce around him.

The difficulty of that task could be measured by comments about Allen in the conservative blogosphere.

Daniel Cortez, communications director of the Tea Party Patriots for George Allen, seems unconcerned by such mud-slinging.

“People that throw bombs in a campaign do so only because they have nothing else to say. They have no record, so they have to attack. It’s a common tactic,” Cortez said. “I’m with George Allen because he’ll take the high road.”

In an e-mail, John Jaggers, director of operations for the Northern Virginia Tea Party, made it clear Cortez does not speak for any Tea Party groups besides his own.

Jaggers went on to add the Northern Virginia Tea Party does not endorse candidates during primary election cycles. Further, “We seek to educate ourselves and fellow citizens on the proper role of government in our society. “

Jaggers’ said his group emphasizes issues over personalities and concerns about Allen in particular are only “To the degree that George Allen voted for policies leading to the fiscal crisis. Governor Allen will be challenged aggressively by all conservative constituencies, including the Tea Party.”

Meanwhile, Allen is attempting to stay above the in-fighting. He said he learned much from the last campaign, which was plagued by controversy and turned out to be his first election defeat since his initial foray into politics in 1979.

“It’s absolutely essential to stay focused on ideas and the agenda you’re running on,” Allen said.

For supporters like Butler-Short, that will do just fine.

“We can’t fool around this election,” she said. “We need candidates who can win. And George Allen can win.”

The George Allen Record – Jobs – February 19, 1996

On February 19, 1996, Governor George Allen announced that a major campaign promise had been fulfilled with the creation of 151,800 net new jobs in the first two years of his administration.  Allen had pledged during his campaign that his policies would result in 125,000 new jobs over his four-year term.  He exceeded that number – in half the time.

In announcing the achievement, Allen said:

“In 1993, I told the people of Virginia that if they would give me the honor and responsibility of serving as their governor, I would work hard to foster a positive business environment conducive to investment, economic growth and the creation of more job opportunities.  Not only did we achieve our goal – we surpassed it, and we accomplished it in just 2 years – half the time promised.”

George Allen provided an objective example of how eliminating excessive regulation and taxation fosters job creation — a lesson for Washington today.  By the end of Allen’s term, with the combination of more prompt permitting, lower taxes and personal recruitment, Virginia had added 310,000 net new jobs and attracted a staggering $14 billion in private capital investment.

If you’re a tea party member running for the U.S. Senate, does that mean automatic support from fellow tea party members? Not necessarily.

So far, no one from the Democratic party has stepped forward to announce a run for the seat, although pundits predict that former Gov. Tim Kaine, currently chairman of the Democratic National Committee, may throw his hat in the ring.

On the Republican side, former Sen. George Allen and tea party member Jamie Radtke, a mother of three from the Richmond area, have announced that they are running.

George Allen Statement on the 2nd Anniversary of the Jobless Stimulus

George Allen Statement on the 2nd Anniversary of the Jobless Stimulus

“Two years ago today, President Obama signed into law an $800 billion jobless stimulus bill that promised to keep unemployment under 8%.  Instead the American people have endured 21 consecutive months of 9% or higher unemployment, 2.6 million jobs have been lost, and our nation’s debt has hit a record-setting $14 trillion.  It is clear that only thing this jobless stimulus bill has created is more debt for our children to bear.  President Obama and Washington liberals like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi need to listen to the American people — spending sprees, tax hikes and government mandates are hurting our families and small businesses.  Washington needs to stop standing in the way of job creators and work to reduce taxes, unleash our plentiful energy resources, and end excessive government regulations.”
