George Allen Statement on FL Health Care Ruling

- Federal Judge Rules Individual Mandate Unconstitutional –

Mt. Vernon, VA – U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson has ruled the “individual mandate” portion of the federal health care law unconstitutional, becoming the second federal judge to do so.  U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson of Virginia ruled in a similar fashion in December.  Senate candidate George Allen today issued the following statement:

“Today’s ruling by Judge Roger Vinson in Florida is another victory for the voices of Virginians and Americans who oppose this unfair, anti-job, unconstitutional federal government dictate.  The constitutionally sound judgments made by Judge Vinson and Judge Hudson echo what Americans have believed all along – that this health care bill and its odious mandates exceed the constitutional bounds of the federal government.

“Recently Senator Webb said he would ‘prefer’ to let the bill play out in the courts and then ‘adapt.’   It is past time for Senator Webb and his liberal colleagues to “adapt” and work to repeal this monstrosity.  Rather than dictates and dependency, we need to replace this massive, expensive experiment with reforms that foster more affordable and accessible health care opportunities for families and small business owners.”

Allen Calls for fewer regulations on business

Chesterfield Observer

By Greg Pearson

February2, 2011

Former Virginia Gov. and Sen. George Allen test drove his business stump speech last Friday night before 360 businesspeople, government leaders and guests at the Holiday Inn Koger Center. Allen was the featured speaker at the annual banquet of the Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce and is the likely Republican candidate for a Senate seat in the November 2012 election.

Just a few days before the chamber banquet, Allen officially announced his candidacy to reclaim the seat now held by Democrat Jim Webb. Some believe Allen contributed to his own defeat in 2006 when he used the slur “macaca” during a speaking engagement. Chesterfield typically votes Republican, and candidates depend on the Chesterfield Republican Committee to deliver a large Republican margin to offset other areas of the state that vote Democratic.

ICYMI: Why I’m Running for the U.S. Senate in Virginia

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Why I’m Running for the U.S. Senate in Virginia

From The American Spectator

By George Allen

Thursday, January 27, 2011

During our history, Americans have risen to face many challenges. Traveling throughout the Commonwealth listening to the voices of Virginians, I hear growing concern and frustration that today’s challenges are being made worse by the federal government in Washington. It’s difficult for our neighbors and family members to find work in a sputtering economy. People are worried about paying their bills due to rising energy and health care costs. And parents are fearful that Washington’s out-of-control spending and rising national debt will rob our children of the same future opportunities our parent’s generation handed to us.

I am respectfully asking that the voters of Virginia hire me on for six years to fight on behalf Virginia voices and values which are being ignored by Washington today. The 2012 election will be pivotal in determining the trajectory of our country: Will our children and grandchildren know the full blessings of freedom in the promise of America? Will they see their opportunities to achieve the American Dream continue to decline or will America’s best years lie ahead? We can spark an American comeback, but only by listening to the owners of our government, “We the People,” adhering to our foundational principles, reining in federal spending, and creating conditions for more opportunities for jobs.

While attending hundreds of town halls, rallies and meetings across Virginia, the message I heard consistently was that the people of Virginia want a leaner, less burdensome and more accountable government. Our nation’s budget ought to be executed with the same discipline that small businesses and families use across the country. That is why I was one of about a dozen other Senators to vote against funding the Bridge to Nowhere. Washington needs to show it has the discipline to ensure there is no more wasteful spending on Bridges to Nowhere, orchid gardens in Pittsburgh, and indoor rainforests in Iowa. It is past time to rein in government. And while earmarks may be a small part of the budget deficit, they need to be stopped until the overall budget is balanced, and then a two-thirds majority should be required to pass any earmark.

Why I’m Running for the U.S. Senate in Virginia

That is why was one of about a dozen other Senators to vote against funding the Bridge to Nowhere.

Congress also needs to enact a real budget reform plan that includes a balanced budget amendment, line item veto and a “Paycheck Penalty” that would withhold Members of Congress salaries if they don’t pass appropriations bills on time. It’s their job, and it’s what they are paid to do. And, if they do not get this job done on time, then withhold their pay. The only way to rein in federal deficit spending is to change the way Washington operates.

Our leaders in Washington need to be willing to fight to repeal or defund the unfair, harmful, unconstitutional federal government takeover of health care. In the Senate I will stand up for the Virginia voices who oppose the dictates and mandates of this anti-jobs health care monstrosity and fight to replace it with reforms that will deliver on the promise to make health care more affordable and accessible, including personal health savings accounts, and expand competition and choice by allowing health insurance to be acquired across state lines.

Virginians are worried that skyrocketing electricity, fuel and food costs that are diminishing the quality of life and causing thousands of jobs to be moved overseas. To reduce energy costs for our families and small businesses, we need a winning American energy plan that encourages practical conservation and innovation; utilizes all of our plentiful resources including clean coal technology, natural gas and oil; and removes outdated regulatory barriers to the next generation of nuclear power. America is blessed with more energy resources than any country in the world and it is time to unleash our resources and creativity, not bury them under stifling EPA regulations.

Today America and Virginia face many challenges. The looming tax hikes, spending sprees, and government mandates from Washington are stifling the source of American innovation — free people and free enterprise. Virginians are ready for Washington to stop being part of the problem and start implementing real solutions to the issues confronting our families and businesses. If given the honor and responsibility of serving Virginia in the United States Senate, I pledge to work hard for the voices, values and prosperous future of all Virginians.

George Allen Statement on Widening Deficit

- CBO Says Gap Now $1.5 Trillion, Larger Than Last Year –

Mt. Vernon, VA – The Congressional Budget Office has announced that the federal budget deficit has grown to $1.5 trillion for this fiscal year, larger than the original estimate of $1.3 trillion. George Allen today issued the following statement:

“Today’s CBO report showing our federal deficit spending has hit a new record level reinforces the urgency for reforming the way Washington operates.  The big government, borrow-and-spend policies of Pelosi-Reid-Webb have harmed our countries economic growth and endangered the future opportunities of our children.  Washington needs to live with in its means by bringing the federal budget down to previous levels and enacting a real budget reform plan that includes a balanced budget amendment, a presidential line-item veto and earmark reform.   It’s time Senator Webb and his Washington colleagues start listening to the voices and common sense values of Virginia and stop the unprecedented, reckless spending in Washington.”

George Allen sings the Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Yesterday I signed Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge. This was the first document I signed after filing my declaration of candidacy. By signing, I have pledged to Virginians and Americans that I will oppose any and all increases in marginal income tax rates for individuals or businesses, or adjustments of deductions not offset by other tax decreases.

I’m one who believes that Thomas Jefferson was right: a wise and frugal government should not take from the mouths of labor the bread they have earned.

You can tell a lot about what people will do in the future based on what they have done in the past.  My record is one of cutting taxes and keeping the burdens on the hard-working taxpayers as low as possible.  That is the best and truest way to spur job growth and foster economic freedom.

To me, signing this pledge is an affirmation of everything I have always believed about the proper role and scope of government: individuals and families know better than government.

Allen Promises to protect taxpayers’ wallets

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Gov. George Allen has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in his race for Virginia’s U.S. Senate seat. The Pledge, sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), commits signers to “oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses … and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.”

ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, 41 U.S. Senators and 237 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, thirteen governors and over 1,200 state legislators have signed the Pledge.

“I want to congratulate Gov. Allen for taking the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. The American people clearly showed their displeasure in November with the tax-and-spend policies coming from Washington. They want real solutions that create jobs and cut government spending,” said Grover Norquist, president of ATR.

“By signing the Pledge, George Allen demonstrates that he understands the problems of hard-working taxpayers nationwide, but especially the taxpayers of Virginia.”

“I challenge all candidates for federal office to make the same commitment to taxpayers by signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge today,” Norquist continued.

George Allen Statement on State of the Union

- Washington Speeches Must be Matched with Action, Visions of Role of Government Contrast –

Mt. Vernon, VA – President Barack Obama tonight spoke to a joint session of Congress and the nation in the annual State of the Union address. George Allen issued the following statement:

“No one disputes that President Obama is a gifted orator, but we need the right actions more than the right words.  People want to reverse job-destroying policies and instead unleash America’s businesses and entrepreneurs to create jobs.

“Since Senator Jim Webb went to Washington and embraced the liberal policies of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, we have had rising joblessness and skyrocketing national debt.  Talk of simply freezing spending now is much more than a day late and trillions of dollars short.

“I’m one who believes that if government reduces burdensome regulations, keeps taxes low, and unleashes our plentiful energy resources then entrepreneurs in the private sector will innovate and create jobs so more Americans can achieve their dreams.”

“As Susan and I have traveled throughout Virginia during the last several years, we’ve talked to people anxious about losing their jobs and their homes.  Many parents worry that the rising national debt will rob our children of future opportunities.  And people are frustrated that Washington continues to ignore their views and values.  The elections in 2012 will be pivotal in determining the trajectory of our country and if we will continue to decline or begin to ascend again.

Video Script: “Voices”

You know what we’ve been getting from Washington?

Overspending, finger pointing and government mandates.

What’s missing?

Listening.

Hi, I’m George Allen.

Susan and I have been traveling throughout the Commonwealth listening to the voices of Virginia.

And people are anxious and worried about losing their jobs, and their homes.  Fearful that the rising national debt will rob our children of the opportunities we had. And frustrated, really frustrated that Washington continues to ignore us.

One of my heroes, Thomas Jefferson said that the sum of good government is a wise and frugal Government… that shall not take from the mouths of labor the bread they have earned.

I believe that these principles are as true today as they were at the foundation of our United States.

The pivotal elections coming up in 2012 are going to determine the trajectory of our country, whether the opportunity to achieve the American Dream will continue to decline, or begin to ascend again.

Friends, it’s time for an American comeback.

A comeback with leaders in Washington who listen to We The People, adhere to foundational principles, rein in spending and start creating opportunities for more jobs.

Now to get we’re going to need more leaders listening to Virginia voices.

Leaders who will fight to Repeal and replace this government mandated healthcare experiment, Pass a balanced budget amendment and the line-item veto, And reduce our families’ energy costs by unleashing our American resources and creativity.

Today I’m announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

You know me as someone willing to fight for the people of Virginia,  And I’d like the responsibility to fight for you again.

Hire me on for six years and I pledge to work hard restoring freedom, personal responsibility and opportunity for all.

Our cause is one we all share.

To bring Virginia’s voices and values back to Washington.

And Susan and I sure look forward to seeing you on the trail ahead, listening and discussing ideas for achievable reforms that’ll put our country back on the path to prosperity.

Thank you and please stay strong for freedom.
