Former Virginia governor and U.S. Sen. George Allen, who knows a little bit about politics and football, put it like this:
“We’re past the two-minute drill,” the former University of Virginia quarterback and son of a Washington Redskins coach told campaign workers yesterday at Sen. John McCain’s Henrico County headquarters.
“We’ve got a minute to go.”
Allen and other Virginia Republican officials joined former presidential hopeful Fred Thompson on a barnstorming trip around the state, imploring volunteers to carry the ball and get out the vote for McCain.
Meantime, two Democratic hopefuls for governor in 2009 — Del. Brian J. Moran, D-Alexandria, and Terry McAuliffe — crisscrossed the state separately, kicking off canvassing for Sen. Barack Obama.
Trailing Obama in national polls, Republicans acknowledge that McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, need a victory in Virginia to stand a chance of winning the White House.
“If McCain doesn’t win Virginia, we can all go to bed early,” said John H. Hager, former lieutenant governor and ex-state GOP chairman.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell and Del. Christopher B. Saxman, R-Staunton, a co-chairman of McCain’s Virginia campaign, joined Thompson, a former Tennessee senator and well-known actor, on the barnstorming tour.
