Former Virginia Gov. George Allen urged students to get creative and help America assert its energy independence during a speech at UCF on Wednesday night. Allen’s speech, titled “Start Your Creative Engines to Fuel America’s Energy Security,” offered a conservative view of solutions to the country’s energy problems.
“Pontificating elites say that ‘America is addicted to oil,’” he said. “But America is addicted to freedom — the freedom and liberty to move where and when we want. We don’t care if it is peanut oil or batteries … all we care about is if it’s available. Saying that we’re addicted to oil is missing the point.”
Allen said the U.S. should turn to clean-coal technology, nuclear power, and fund more research into wind, solar and water power. He added that energy solutions should be managed by the private sector with the government offering incentives. He complimented UCF researchers and students for their work with nanotechnology, saying that it will be “the next transformation of our society.”
