Cosby High School in Chesterfield performed a great service to students this month: It introduced them to the excitement and responsibility that arrive with voting age. The school, filled with remarkable teachers, administrators, and students, hosted a festival of democracy.
At separate events, former Republican Gov. George Allen and former Democratic National Chairman Terry McAuliffe made the case for their respective parties’ candidates — and fielded questions from government students whose poise and depth of knowledge impressed both of these veteran pols. Allen and McAuliffe should be congratulated for their dynamic performances as well. Civil debate is alive in America, despite what you might see on cable and the Internet. The students raise hope for the future.
The Times-Dispatch was privileged to help sponsor the events. We were fortunate to work with two sterling partners, Chesterfield County Public Schools and UVa’s estimable Center for Politics. Cosby’s Renee Serrao, government teacher extraordinaire, and Brenda Mayo, the school’s dynamic principal, deserve special thanks, as does our former colleague, Cordel Faulk, who now makes his living at the Center for Politics.
