Hours before John McCain accepted the Republican presidential nomination, former Sen. George Allen yesterday declined to indulge in what might have been.
“I’m looking forward and I’m happy to be working hard for John McCain and Governor [Sarah] Palin,” Allen said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Regardless of what position I’m in, as long as I’m breathing, I’m going to be fighting for ideals and principles and solutions.”
…
Allen has said he won’t run for governor next year, but he acted like he would like to run for office again.
“I haven’t decided,” Allen said. “The only campaign I’m concerned with right now is John McCain’s.”
Allen was interviewed at the Radisson Hotel at the University of Minnesota, after he promoted McCain and Palin to a breakfast meeting of the Virginia delegation.
Allen, never considered a friend of environmentalists, is advising the McCain campaign on energy policy, economic competitiveness, and nanotechnology policy.
Allen and McCain still differ on drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Allen favors drilling, while McCain does not. Allen said he did not try to change McCain’s mind on this issue.
