Reaction to Allen announcement (Richmond Times Dispatch)
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, Democrat:
“I was surprised. . . . But there’s a lot of surprises and moving pieces in Virginia politics these days, so I’m sure there will be more.
“I’d be surprised if his career as a candidate or wanting to hold elective office is over. I don’t know exactly what it would be, but I have a feeling you’ll see his name on a ballot sometime again.”
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Republican, likely candidate for governor:
“I was surprised. I guess he thought it was time for him to focus on his private and professional life and not so much on his political life.”
Bolling said he regards himself “as a George Allen protégé.” Bolling said he would not have sought the nomination for governor had Allen run.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Republican, likely candidate for governor:
“He has been a tremendous public figure in Virginia. He is the most revolutionary and historic governor of my lifetime.”
Because of Allen “we are safer, the welfare rolls are down and there are better standards in schools.”
John H. Hager, chairman of the Virginia Republican Party:
“As a political leader, he led the way for Republican successes at the ballot box, which set the stage for Republican majorities in both Virginia and the nation. As a result of his leadership and accomplishments, Virginia has become a great place to live, work, learn and raise a family.”
