‘Vision,’ ‘Principles’ Guide Obenshain’s Rise In GOP Ranks

HARRISONBURG — Rockingham County Republican Committee Chairman Mike Meredith believes the quick rise of Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, within the GOP ranks is good news for conservatives.
“It’s a great thing,” Meredith said of Obenshain’s new position as a minority whip, “because he’s got a vision. He’s got principles, and he’s got integrity.”
Obenshain’s new role, in just his second term, came about Monday as part of a slew of changes among the Republican leadership. The anticipated shake-up came in the wake of the GOP losing control of the Senate in this month’s election.
Obenshain, in a letter to fellow Republicans on Nov. 13, called for the party to chart a new course, closing ranks in support of conservative issues as it did in the 1990s under Republican Gov. George Allen.
