With the election of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the United States has a new vibrant ally in Europe.  As we saw from his trip last week, Sarkozy is determined to restore good U.S.-French relations and is eager to repair the damage done to this rapport during Jacques Chirac’s tenure. Elections around the world can have an important impact on America and have led to restored positive relations with France and Germany.  Upcoming elections in South Koreaand Taiwan will have meaning to the United States and the free world. Pakistan’s political turmoil surely affects our war on hate-filled vile terrorists.

Sarkozy was elected in May of 2007 as the leader of the Union for a Popular Movement, France’s center-right political party defeating Segolene Royal of the Socialist Party. Sarkozy’s campaign focused on social and economic reforms such as curbing the power of trade unions, dropping social charges from those wanting to work longer than the 35-hour work week and cutting punitive French taxes. This election has injected a breath of fresh air into French domestic and foreign affairs.
